It depends on the class you get after the first, your level 1 class gives you all proficiency that that class is supposed to give, but once you multiclass you get less stuff than if you had picked it at level 1. I know Cleric domains that give heavy armour give it even if you pick it after level 1, but its possible fighter or paladin don't give it so you would have to start as those classes.

FYI, If you are multi-classing for heavy armor: you have to do the class with it at 1st level. Then you can go whatever class you want.

It seems multi classing into a class with Heavy armor profieciency doesnt give it? I multiclassed warlock into every class on the list and none showed me gaining profeciency

I multi-classed Shadowheart into Fighter but it did not give Heavy Armour Proficiency... Is this intended or a bug?
I just checked and indeed the only class that can give you heavy armor when multiclassing into it after level 1 is cleric with the specific domains that give heavy armor because the proficiency comes from the domain and not the cleric class : Life, nature, tempest, war.
If you want heavy armour from Paladin or Fighter you have to start as one from level 1 and multiclass later.
