Metamagic: Careful Spell BG3 Guide
Metamagic: Careful Spell is one of seven Metamagics available to Sorcerers. Metamagics are a Sorcerer-specific feature that allows them to alter the properties of their Spells to benefit them and their allies, or to simply bolster the effects of the spell casted. In Early Access, there are 7 Metamagics that you can spend Sorcery Points on, each of which have varying Sorcery Point costs depending on how potent they are. To use Metamagics in Baldur's Gate 3, click on the Metamagic you want to use, then click on and cast the spell you want to apply the Metamagic on. Spells that are compatible with your chosen Metamagic will glow white on your Spell HUD. Only one Metamagic can be applied to a spell at a time.
Sorcery Points are a resource only available to Level 2 or higher Sorcerers. Their main purpose is to apply Metamagics onto casted spells to improve them. They can, however, also be used to create or regain Spell Slots in a pinch through the Create Spell Slot Bonus Action. Sorcery Points are replenished by having a Long Rest at Camp or by sacrificing Spell Slots through Create Sorcery Points.
Metamagic: Careful Spell costs 1 Sorcery Point and allows your allies to automatically succeed Saving Throws against the spell you cast. As such, this Metamagic is only compatible with Spells that impose Saving Throws. This Metamagic is especially useful if you have multiple AOE Spells prepared that require Saving Throws. Under normal circumstances, you would have to position yourself or your AOE Spell in the perfect way in order to maximize the number of enemies you hit, while avoiding hitting any allies. With this Metamagic equipped, you can be a bit more haphazard with your positioning, maximizing damage done to enemies, while minimizing, or in some cases completely negating, the effect on your allies.
Consider taking Metamagic: Careful Spell if you have one or more of the following Spells prepared (the full release of Baldur's Gate 3 may feature more than the options given): Acid Splash,
Burning Hands,
Fear,
Fireball,
Hypnotic Pattern,
Shatter,
Stinking Cloud,
Thunderwave,
Web. All Sorcerers can pick Careful Spell from their list of Metamagic starting at Level 2. In Early Access, you only get to choose 3 Metamagics to keep, and are unable alter your choices after picking. In the full release of Baldur's Gate 3, however, you will be able to alter your list of Metamagic through respeccing.
Metamagic: Careful Spell Tips & Notes

Definitely bugged - or at least not coded to work with very many spells. It doesn't do anything on spells like Web, Stinking Cloud, Sleet Storm, etc. What makes this ability better than Evocation Wizard's Sculpt spells is supposed to be its ability to allow you to cast Save or Suck spells safely around allies. Of the Save and Suck spells it pretty much only works on Hypnotic Pattern. Spells like Fear & Confusion already ignore allies so that severely limits this spell's applications.

Probably best paired with a rogue or monk in your party that has Uncanny Evasion so you could lob a fireball onto of them and they would get no damage.

Wait , using this with a web spell means the team can fight in a web spell with no worry about getting Enwebbed every turn or just the turn when cased?
So basically use this with say thunder wave to knock enemies off a ledge while sparing your party members caught in the wave. Sort of like evocation specialist for wizards. Although with Evocation you straight up, don’t hit party members with elemental aoe I think. Careful Spell just allows party members to succeed savings throws on friendly fire aoe so still might take half damage etc.
