Really, really useful --> squeeze through small entries, get small so allies can throw throw you if your strength/jump is bad, escape consequence of misdeeds (theft, assault), synergy with Speak with Dead (the dead refuse to talk with their murderers), unlock race specific magic item abilities, re-attempt failed dialogue checks and of course +1d4 to checks with the ring Boon of Shapeshifter.
As an invocation its mid/ late game useful because it opens up an item slot that might have been filled by the Mask of the Shapeshifter to get benefit of this spell
It's also of indefinite duration (until long rest)
Lastly, there are only 3-4 "A" tier invocations, you'll have room for this if you run 12 levels of Warlock

Spell only allows you to pretend to be different race. Not really worth it.
Thought I was in the clear during an interrogation scene. “They won’t recognize it’s me, I’m disguised as an elf.” Wrong, they fully recognized it was me. Oh well.
