Does this work if an enemy shoots at an ally from afar? Id think so

One interesting thing about this style, is you dont actually need to be in base contact with the enemy as you would envision this style being used.
You can be behind the actual tank and this will be activated every round , as the AI will not think to walk forward and hit you instead. Your fighter can still do decent damage with a ranged weapon or throwing. Not game changing , but something that helps the viability of this lower tier style.

I used this on my ally like 5 times in a row and they hit every time. Does this work?

Occasionally the game bugs and you need to reselect the skill in your reactions. I have had this bug happen occasionally when I load saves.
General advice with any of the reaction skills in the current build is to just re select them every time you load your saves...

Not sure this works. I picked it and it doesn't show on the character sheet under: lvl 2 fighter.
Also needs some extra wording. Someone reading this could possibly not be sure if he/she needs to be 1.5m away from the attacker or the friendly party member they mean to protect.

Interesting fighting style. In solasta and dn5e, you elect to use protection before attacking dice are rolled, and then the enemy will make a disadvantage roll. In BG3, you only elect to use this after a successful hit has already been rolled, giving you the option to make the enemy roll a second attack dice and possibly cause a miss.
