If I gain proficiency with a weapon from sources that aren't monk itself (i.E. longsword, neither 2-handed nor heavy), does it still work as a monk weapon? Can I be a longsword monk?

Improvised attacks work with this but throwing weapons even if your proficient with does not :(

Monk weapons are any weapon you have proficiency in that is not “heavy” which is it the “two-handed” property listed on some weapons. Meaning that Versatile weapons being used with two hands will still proc this. Allowing you to make use of Great Weapon Fighting as a fighting style. Great Weapon Master feat does not work since versatile weapons are not heavy.
Also, for whatever reason a Druid/monk cannot trigger this while attacking with Flame Blade (empty off-hand) even with scimitar proficiency. Regular scimitars work however. Pact weapons from Warlock work as long as they are not heavy.
