BG3 Orthon Yurgir Dialogue Options

You can meet Orthon in the Gauntlet of Shar. Orthon Yurgir can be found in the east part of the area (X:-652 Y:-776). You can ask him to recite his contract and find the loophole in it, and deceive him into killing his own minions, even himself. This will affect the journals for Break Yurgir's Contract. If you choose to kill him, wait for Raphael to seek you again. When given the option, you have the following choices (These options can vary or expand based on your character):

  1. He wants you dead.
  2. I've had dealings with that devil. Maybe we can help each other.
  3. There's nothing stopping you from leaving. I know a way out.
  4. Attack.

If you choose option 1, Astarion will want you to tell him Raphael's location.

  1. Let's share our experiences about Raphael. Perhaps we can help each other.
  2. Raphael could be anywhere. But let me go, and I'll free you from his grasp.
  3. I've got nothing to spit out- not for you, anyway.
  4.  Attack.

If you choose option one, he will bring up his contract. This will give you an additional quest: Break Yurgir's Contract. You can choose to complete this quest or continue with Raphael's original bidding and complete Kill Raphael's Old Enemy. Your choices here will affect both quests.

  • You can follow through with Raphael's request to kill Yurgir and proceed to the next objective.
  • If you decide to go against Raphael. If you agree to help him search the are to solve the loopholes of his contract, AstarionShadowheart and Karlach will disapprove. Keep in mind that if you succeed in breaking the contract and attempt to ask for a reward, he will only offer your life a reward and until Raphael will soon make a reappearance offering him another contract; Yurgir will allow you to take anything he left behind. To find out how to break the contract view: Break Yurgir's Contract.

Make a decision to conclude either quest and progress through The Pale Elf with Astarion

Orthon Yurgir Notes and Tips

  • The bombs Yurgir throws can be thrown back, they deal fire and force damage, so they won't deal as much damage since Yurgir and his minions are immune to fire damage, but it would help in the first part of the fight where they're all grouped up initially.
  • If you decide to help Yurgir, he will become a valuable ally and companion for the later parts of the game.
  • If you decide to break Yurgir's contract by killing the Last Justiciar before talking to him, Raphael will appear to offer Yurgir a new contract. If you decide to kill Yurgir, you should attack him without starting a conversation with him.

Imagin this. You romanced Karlach or Wyll. You keep Wylls contract with Mizora. You persuade Karlach to go back to Avernus and you and Wyll join her. Then you charge the first demon attack. And within it you find you old ally, your unlikely friend. He locks eyes with you, recognising the little rabbit. THen you 3 and Yurgir wreak havoc amongst the demons.

I didnt get an option to talk with him, he and his crew were set to ambush me above the displacer beast + corpse bed

          Man a bro.
You meet him again and can convince him to turn on Raph.
He has a lot of respect for you as a warrior. And brother, i you, you all right.

If you want tlak with animals, have a talk with Nessa after your conversation with Yurgir. You can pass roll dices to turn her against her master.

You can force him to drop his crossbow and equip it for yourself.

I was very disappointed to know that you don't get the bonus XP for persuading him to suicide. Merely 150 for Raphael quest. And he doesn't leave the corpse after. Which is why I decided to fight him fairly.

The combat can be trivialized even on Tactician by teleporting Radiant Orb stacking Shart (with Spirit Guardians enabled) directly on top of this dude. The dialogue
triggers immediately, but then Shart is still on top of the dude, and he's starting the combat with 8 orb stacks, which forces him to miss his own grenades.

Additionally, if you manage to Banish (lvl 4 spell) him -- he returns to Avernus and is considered "dead" (at least for the sake of this encounter). Although, in that case you don't get the loot (very rare crossbow), nor the extra XP, obviously.

                  Mistake:
                  1. He wants you dead.
                  2. I've had dealings with that devil. Maybe we can help each other.
                  3. There's nothing stopping you from leaving. I know a way out.
                  4. Attack.
If you choose option 1, Astarion disaproves

Accidentally stumbled into this fight and it went very easy: Aggro the displacer beast from afar with an arrow, then the whole horde will aggro.
Wait on the stairs for the beast and kill it, then jump on the platform below. Place a cloud of daggers in the chokepoint, where all the demons will land. The first wave was instantly killed by "create water" + "lightning", as they were all bunched up, the rest came in pairs of twos, so cloud of daggers + blender-Karlach did it. After that, it was a 1-v-4 for Yurgir and he lasted two rounds.

For those of you trying to pass with Dialog, here are some notes since above doesn't say anything regarding this. BUT to convince him to kill his own minions, you have to succeed a passive Wisdom check while listening to his song/contract that rolls in the background (unsure of what you need to hit).

It will then give you an option for the Persuasion line "The lyrics are a trick. You've always had an audience - your followers. Get rid of them". You must pass a Persuasion DC 16. Passing this, Yurgir will order his minions to send themselves back to h*ll, so they massacre each other.

He will angrily say he still hears the song. You will only have the choice to Attack or 1 Dialog option, "You're not finished yet - the displacer can hear you, can't she? Kill her." Passing another Persuasion roll DC21, will convince him to kill his Displacer beast, Nessa.

The last dialog persuasion option (DC21 again) is, "Exactly. Kill yourself, complete the contract, and you'll be reborn in Avernus. Free." When passed, he does so, not before bringing in some very colorful threats to you.

Shadowheart and Astarion both approve of the end result. This will offset the disapproval from earlier (he jumped 3 points from before the conversation started). Halsin doesn't care.

                      Overall, very enjoyable dialog.

If you kill him with any bombs out, combat will go into turn based mode immediately when he dies, and you can pick up all the bombs to use them yourself.

                        • Anonymous

After dying many many times, I managed to scrape by doing the following: go up the back stairs, pass the perception check, then cast Evard’s Black Tentacles and then Hunger of Hadar. I got lucky and caught Yurgir’s party by surprise. Then I used Dominate Beast for Halsin’s first move to take control of the displaced beast.

                          • Anonymous

Nobody seems to be mentioning this, but the bombs he throws are very powerful and you DO NOT want to be near them when they explode. So...what to do? Well...just throw them back! Literally mouse over the bombs, right click and click "throw" and the currently selected character will show you where you can throw them. They'll need to path over to the bombs before they throw them, so make sure they can reach them. He generally throws 3 at a time, which wasn't a problem with at least one companion with Extra Attack - Throw triggers extra attack, so you can throw 2 with one character and the third with the next character. They deal both fire and force damage, so will only be about half as effective against Yurgir and his minions, but they have a large explosion radius and are great initially in the fight when all the enemies are still grouped up firing down on you. In my first fight against him I was kinda panicking because those bombs looked really deadly, until I realised I could throw them back and it made the fight a breeze haha. I used that trick later on in my playthrough as well in one of the final 3 boss fights and it made that fight really easy too. And if you're worried about hit % chance, just throw the bombs on the ground next to enemies as you would a Fireball spell. They won't miss.

                            • Anonymous

Not really seeing anyone mention it, but if you're wondering if it's worth helping Yurgir, he will become a valuable ally in the fight against Raphael later, as well as during the final confrontation of the game as a summonable temporary companion (i.e. - during battles in the very final stretch of the game).

He's not super powerful by the endgame, but he is helpful. Even when he was knocking my group out of glove of invulnerability during the Raphael fight, he was also knocking enemies out that tried grouping up in it, making them vulnerable. He constantly goes invisible during the battle, too, so as long as you don't group up near him, Raphael and his minions can never kill him.

I was expecting him to be a douchebag like every other NPC you help in this game, but surprisingly the devil was one of the most amiable people you ever help. Probably in part because he loves the hunt, and you're always hunting exceptional prey.

If you break Yurgir's contract by killing the last Justiciar before talking to him, Raphael apears offering Yurgir a new contract.
Should you want to take the option of killing Yurgir you should at this point straight up attack him without starting a conversation and attept to kill him räght away.

Guys on tactician my paladin used blood of lathander mace, went behind his back 'also had see invisibility on me' when i approached he was instantly blinded, i then moved Karlach near me, when Yurgir tried to move and go invisible he was instantly seen and head smacked by both of us. He was dead next turn

When you reach displaced beast it will start running and if you follow it you will get dialogue with Yurgur if you however smell a trap 'like i did' and go around ti behind him, he will instantly be hostile.

                                        • Anonymous

Yurgir will turn invisible almost every turn, but his invisibility 'spell' seems to be bugged. My main character has the eye implant from Volo, which will force Yurgir to make checks to lose his invisibility. However, this character cannot see Yurgir when he is invisible. I assume it works the same of you use the 'See Invisibility' spell.

If you're looking to break his invisibility, use your mouse to find walkable paths in the area you last saw him at. You will notice the pathing will go in a big circle around him, so that's where he is standing. Then use a ranged attack going through that area and it will hit and reveal him. Magic missiles works great for this.

Also, do not be an idiot by using alchemist fire like I did. The minions are immune to fire, and the area of effect will immediately trigger the bombs he throws which will insta-kill your characters. There are also lit braziers in the area that you should NOT stand next to! The bombs explode instantly and your character will repeatedly get downed from fire damage unless you turn the braziers off.

A great cheese strat I managed to find was the Hunger of Hadar spell. It creates darkness and limits vision to about 5ft. I had about of his minions trapped in darkness that could not find their way out.

I'll be honest, this encounter was a real doozy for me. I'm new to CRPGs, so I'm playing on Balanced difficulty with a regular barbarian character. On the first couple of attempts, I tried skirting by their ambush and fighting them on the top level and later kiting them to a chokepoint, but the combination of eight minions with fire immunity/physical resist plus the displacer beast plus Yurgir was simply too much to handle.

What I ended up doing was separating my avatar from the main group to go punt a couple of isolated minions into the abyss as they were wandering around, just to thin out their numbers without aggroing the rest of them. Then I attacked the main encampment, focusing solely on killing the remaining minions, then retreated. After paying Withers to revive a couple of my party members, I charged in for the final assault on Yurgir himself and his pet.

I think it's really damned cool that a lot of these special encounters (e.g. Yurgir or the surgeon in the House of Healing or even the gnoll fight earlier in Act I) have dialogue options that substantially reduce the difficulty by having enemies turn on themselves, but I wish that the straightforward approach was just a bit more feasible. My barbarian is a pretty simple-minded warrior who likes to do all of her convincing with an axe blade, so I'm sure she would appreciate that lol.

This fight for me was pretty easy on tactician, I think the key is to make him kill his minions and then focus the beast, if you keep debuffing Yurgir he won't be much of a threat, and I'm not even playing super meta builds to cheese the fight, my main character is a dual wielder swords bard lol

                                              • Anonymous

Probably a good idea to back up to someplace with more equal footing after starting the fight. I had everyone go back up the stairs and easily blasted away at him and his minions as they tried to approach

everyone saything this is a hard fight has absolutley no idea how to build characters in this game

i walked up to him Hit him was scared due to all the "this feeels impossible" comments

Only to find quite litterally just threw a bomb that did 20 dmg copped 4 reactions from my team in round 1 and died before i even got a turn to do anything

                                                  Yall Honestly suck really bad
                                                  Im playing in tactician

Bottle with spektator helped me a lot, that was hard fight for me but I sneak attacked from behind pillar, then ran away and came back so they clumped on one spot and got archer on another side and played a little peekaboo with them.

                                                    • Anonymous

Why did Ralphael have him attack the Sharran? I didn't realize there was dialogue until recently seeing a friend go through it.

                                                      • Anonymous

ugh, and of COURSE if you save Yurgir, neither Raphael nor Astarion say a damn word about this in Act 3 when you next see Raphael

Act 3 is just so unresponsive to my choices as a player. surely Raphael would bring this up again. surely Astarion would like another chance at interpreting his scars. blech.

                                                        • Anonymous

Passed a perception check for his ambush so I just went around and merced him and his minions. Didn't even realize he would have dialogue or that he was the beast we had to look out for. I guess all his lines in the battle should have been a hint...

                                                          • Anonymous

You can also persuade him that the way to break his contract is to kill his minions, and his pet displacer; afterwards killing himself. I entered as Karlach. Didn't have to fight anyone and Astarion approved.

                                                            • Anonymous

I ambushed them from the side entrance. With gloomstalker/assassin Astarion, he goes down upon starting combat on tactician. Without the quest notification, I wouldn’t have known this was the big bad Orthon Raphael was harping on. Dialogue will only initiate if you chase the Displacer Beast.

                                                              • Anonymous

His bombs are very powerful and useful in the future if picked up in combat. I managed to collect 16 bombs, maybe they drop them endlessly and he is a source of farm.

                                                                • Anonymous

The easiest way to beat this fight on all difficutlies is to just attack the Displacer Beast with a ranged attack, without letting it run away. that will agro all minions + Yurgir and they will come to you. You can easly gateway them through the very narrow hall, even place barrels of oil or smokepowder. super easy fight, even without Meaty (the flesh golem you get from Balthasar)

                                                                  • Anonymous

Well I learnt well to always bring one character only to walk. Realizing ambush, i just aggro them to the broken stairs and kite them

                                                                    • Anonymous

could be because i had passive on but spoiler when i went to raphels home he was there and was a great ally in the fight runing invisible and dropping 40 damage quiet regurally

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        i accidentally cheesed this fight.
i hid under the platform where all his minions were, in a attempt to make them all clump together in a area for me to use fireball.
then i remember i had karlach carrying the the rune powder that i kept from the towers.

so i had karlach drop it, pass he turn, i positioned myself, casted a fireball on it, it killed everyone and everything except me.
                                                                        it worked.

                                                                        • Anonymous

Bit of a nightmare to defeat. First fight that took me three tries.

You want to sneak up on him from the side, so DO NOT follow the 'cat' (Displacer Beast)! That will lead into an ambush (although also the 'dialogue' way out of the fight). Sneak up behind him and his henchmen but be careful about how you position your companions, as they WILL push you off that ledge, and it's not a nice drop. Your first goal should be to kill Yurgir, so you really do want a 'surprise' attack here.

I think if you miss on your attack, the enemies will not be 'surprised'. Then after taking care of Yurgir, you want to see how many of his troops you can push off the ledge, with either push or something like Eldritch Blast, or Thunderwave. That is just to thin things out temporarily. These guys will all hit twice, have high AC and ARE IMMUNE TO FIRE. RIP Fireball, so much for that. Ask me how I found out they are immune to fire damage.

The Displacer beast is a high priority but not a top priority. Once he has cloned himself a few times he has got to go though.

If you are thinking of taking the dialogue route, you should be ashamed of yourself.
