Benryn Dialogue Options
When you first encounter Benryn, he is stuck under a wood beam in the burning tavern and he yells for help. You can pass a few checks to try to lift the burning wood beam and free him. Your interaction here will update the journal for Rescue the Trapped Man
- [BERSERKER] [STRENGTH] Grip the wreckage. FLING IT ASIDE.
- [INVESTIGATION[ Find leverage to shift the beam
- Leave.
Pass the checks to successfully free him.
Your Quest Journal will once again update with progress on the quest. Use Karlach to scavenge materials from the burning building. Afterward, engage in conversation with Benryn, who is grieving the loss of someone dear to him. You can select from these dialogue options:
- How did the two of you become separated?
- Your actions wouldn't have changed the outcome.
- Leave.
Pick the first option, and Benryn will explain the circumstances of their separation. Choose one of these dialogues as your response:
- What did you mean by mentioning a dowry?
- It's not your fault. There's no way you could have predicted this.
- Be thankful you're still alive.
- Leave.
Opt for the second option, and Benryn will clarify that the dowry was intended for his sister's wedding. Now, choose the second option, and he'll request you to leave him to mourn his loss. Your next objective is to locate the mentioned dowry in order to complete the "Rescue the Trapped Man" quest. The dowry ring is hidden in the haystack, inside the barn. Click on the haystack to reveal the chest.
He will head running to the safe room and find his wife dead. You will then have to find a dowry, you can find it in a barn next to the Zhentarim Hideout entrance.
The Dark Urge
The Dark Urge receives a point of inspiration if/when Benryn dies, regardless of how or when he dies. If you rescue Benryn from the fire, you can kill him at a later time to receive the associated inspiration.
There is a known Dark Urge bug where players may receive the inspiration point for Benryn's death shortly after the nautiloid crashes.

It should have an outcome in Act 2 or 3, it is useless to save him, just for a personal moral choice.

Saving him with Folk Hero background (Wyll for example) gives Inspiration, I also had folk hero so I got 2 but I was already full and decided to save him for later, I got through the mountain and meet that ginthyaki and had to use a couple Inspirations so I went back but he was dead, I reload from before he died and leave my party there and only have Astarion do the cutscene (for good rolls in ginthyaki checks), then went back to my party and he was still alive

To be full RPG you have to use the spell Speak with the dead to learn that the dowry is in the barn.
If you think you can pick the dead woman to put her outside, don't, the guy stand helplessly in the room where the body was even though he souldn't know that. If he sees you pick the body, he will try to call the guards... what an idiot, i tried to save his girl's body for her to have a decent passing (not to be burned) but no

What the heck? I got the Inspiration (Dark Urge) for letting this guy burn. That part makes sense, a very Dark Urge type of thing to get Inspiration from. What doesn't make sense is, I've never been to Waukeen's Rest, I haven't met him. I got this Inspiration after stomping on the Illithid's head in the crashed ship. Had to look up who the heck Benryn was and how I'd 'left him to burn.'

If you break the door right beside him that leads out on to the walkway he finds his dead wife mid-escape and refuses to go anywhere. I ended up having to reload after, but never did know whether he would have just stayed there till he died or not. Neat!

As 'The Dark Urge' I was informed that I watched him burn alive... immediately after exiting the nautiloid

Somehow I got the inspiration "Fresh Kindle For the Fire" on my Dark Urge character. It's for leaving Benryn to die. Except... I'm like 5 minutes into the game I haven't even found Benryn yet on this playthrough.

and the reward for saving this guy who dies on allmost evryones playtrought ? does he even give anything lol ?

Possibly bugged. I get the "Someone is shouting for help" dialogue, but he's apparently already dead when I get to him

It bugged for me, but I managed to fix it. If you rescue him from the beam and lead him downstairs and out the front door, for some reason, he runs into the BURNING wine room and stands behind the counter saying he has to find his wife. I told him I found her dead, but he wasn't satisfied and the quest stayed open and he was bugged out. So... Since he wouldn't leave... I went and picked up her corpse and laid it on the ground next to him(in the BURNING ROOM), that triggered the continuation of the quest and we talked like we weren't standing in an inferno. Fire resistance elixir ftw ;)

Potentially bugged/doomed to die in the full release, still at the shore with the crashed ship when i got inspiration and exp for leaving this man to burn *shrug*
Just in case someone with a different background goes looking for the guy and can't find him.

If you fail the roll you can still free him by bashing the wood beam and destroying it
If you pick up the body after finishing the quest and kill the one guard that becomes hostile, he will follow you wherever you go as he stays near his wife's body.
