act 2 spoiler ahead:
when isobel is kidnapped and the rest of the harpers are lost to shadow curse Jaheira helps us massacre them all and at the end of the cutscene we see Mattis alive. However I could not find him after the cutscene, didnt come to camp with Jaheira anyone knows if he shows up later? Because he seemed to be alright.

No, there is definitely a point in talking to him in act 1. If you catch the other kid trying to pickpocket you (successful Perceptiin check after seeing what wares he sellsnand exiting the shop menu) and tell them to relaxnajdnthat you're not mad, Mol will talk about it in Act 1 and count it as a positive for trusting you, and also talk about it in Act 2 when stating your case when you make it to the Last Light Inn.

For those who get stuck - If you are a magic user (for me i was sorc) and you use the option "this ring doesnt have any magic in it" then silfy will always steal from you successfully. If you want to stop silfy stealing you have to just go straight to the trade option and make sure you make a purchase or the perception check wont show up

does anyone know where Mattis is specifically in Act 3, I only see the two tiefling children in the refugee camp by the storage house?
If you steal the ring by pickpocketing before you interact with him for the first time, he will be very impressed & tell you to keep the ring, then send you to talk to Mol.

Can also appear in Act 3 in Riverton, and with some new items.

I made her flip her coin about 7 times to prove the ring was actually lucky and she just gave me the ring for free with no hassle.

I took his ring then gave it back, but he declined to take it and said “no one’s ever given the stuff they stole back to me”. He also trades with you after and calls off the “others”.

bugged and broken interaction. if you get pickpocketed it just glitches out and you lose your stuff permanently. i don't even know what he took from me.

he is at the last inn and sells the tower key if you were good with the tieflings kids crew, you can have it for free with two checks, 3 choices each, or pay 1k or even 2k if you want to. I don't know if that will have an impact later.

I was a rogue, rolled the sleight of hand. I then pocketed the ring, told the kid to kick rocks for trying to scam me and when I agreed to look at his inventory I got a point of inspiration! You're all welcome ;)

Bards can also do slight of hand trick. It also gave inspiration to myself (entertainer) and to shadow heart while she was in my party (version 8)

Did anyone succeed the perception test when you give the ring back and what does it do?

He also gives you the lucky ring for free if you ask him to flip the coin for like 10 or so times in a row.

You have additional options as a Rogue relating to his dialogue. You can attempt to vanish the ring using slight of hand.
I have gotten some other dialogue with him in the first encounter at some point but I can't remember what I did to get it(was the reason I looked up this wiki hoping to reproduce it on my honour run).
But there are two options that appear where you say that he's either running a soldiers widow scam or an option to say he's running some other scam, he'll either respond with "It's nothing like [insert scam here] but then realizes he's outed himself or he'll say he's never heard of [the scam] before and ask how it's done.
