The Adamantine Forge

Type Quest
Chapter One
Location Grymforge
Reward Adamantine Equipment

The Adamantine Forge is a Quest in Baldur's Gate 3. The Adamantine Forge can be acquired during Chapter One. Completing  The Adamantine Forge will progress the story forward.

The Adamantine Forge Objectives

  • Find the Adamantine Forge. The Duergar are looking for an adamantine forge hidden in Grymforge. We should find it first.
  • Clear the rubble. We found a passage buried in rubble that leads to the adamantine forge. We should clear it.
  • Activate the Adamantine Forge: We found the Adamantine Forge. Now we need to figure out how to activate it.
  • Defeat the Forge Protector: The protector of the forge appeared. We need to defeat it.
  • Pick up the Forged Item: The protector has been defeated. Time to enjoy the fruits of our labour.

The Adamantine Forge Walkthrough

After finding the Rubble at X: -672 Y: 443, you may talk to the Duergar and convince them to tell you what they are looking for. They will reveal that they are looking for the Adamantine Forge, which will unlock this quest, but you have to clear the Rubble to go on.

Despite what the Duergars say, you can actually jump / Misty Step from the area where Nere is trapped up to the area where the "Underdark - Ancient Forge" fast travel location is to unlock the entire area, bypassing the need to clear the rubble.

Clear the Rubble

During the Free True Soul Nere quest you will have to also clear another path to free Nere which is also blocked by stone debris. You will have to make your way until you find Philomeen (X: -527 Y: 464), you will have to convince her not to blow everyone up. You can then convince her to give you a Runepowder Vial, or you can confront her and defeat her to also collect the entire Runepowder Barrel, or steal the Runepowder Barrel  while another character is in dialogue with her.

Go back to the Rubble, throw the Vial on the Rubble and ignite it from a distance. This will open the path for your party on your quest to find the Adamantine Forge.

You can also speak with animals and talk to the Ox to have them clear the rubble.

As soon as you pass through the cleared rubble, you will find some Adamantine Slag while looting the area.

Reach the Adamantine Forge

You must reach the upper area, cross the hanging bridges above pulling the levers. If one of your characters has the ability to teleport far enough, you may use that character to pull the levers (you can also shoot the levers to activate them). This character will be able to cross to the next area with this ability. The path may seem complicated, but there aren't any wrong ways, your characters should be able to gather again before the next battle. On your way to the forge, you should be on the look out for Moulds, they are easily noticeable when they are lying on the ground, but you should also loot every skeletons. There will be surprise attacks, so it is recommended to save your game and be prepared. The Forge can be found at [X: -569 Y: 252].

Activate The Adamantine Forge

Follow the instructions of how to use the Forge down below.

Defeat the Forge Protector

The Grym will become present at the moment you pull the Lava Valve. The Grym has resistances and immunities to almost every type of damage except Bludgeoning (And can only be damaged when superheated). The best strategy to defeat the Grym, is to use the Forge itself: one of your characters (or two in case you don't want to wait many turns) should be positioned next to the lever that hammers the crucible when pulled. And the rest of your crew should work as bait, specially the one party member that pulls the lava valve, to make the Grym walk into the center, once the Grym is there, pull the lever and hammer them down.

How to unlock The Adamantine Forge

  • You will find a group of mad Duergar around Grymforge (X: -669 Y: 443), one of them, called Herdmaster Skarjall, will rudely ask you to cane the beasts to clear the path. If you convince him to tell you what are they looking for, he will tell you that they found Adamantine which cannot be mined, it's made, so they are trying to find the Adamantine Forge. This will unlock the quest.
  • You can earn this quest even before setting foot on Grymforge. There are three drow that were seeking the forge. When you complete Protect the Myconid Circle, Spaw will let you enter a secret part of the circle, in which you can interact with a dead drow. If you cast Speak With Dead on his body, you can learn about this quest. The second one, can be found near the Sussur tree, among a group of Hook Horrors, and the third one, can be found petrified, where you fight the Spectator, near the fort entrance to the Underdark.

How to use the Forge to create Items

The Adamantine Forge can move between two different levels: High Level and Low Level. You'll need to move the Forge into the Lower level to be able to pour magma. To do so, place a mould into the chamber and a Mithral Ore into the Crucible. Interact with the Forge Lever and the anvil will hit, taking the Forge to the lower level. Once you are in the lower level follow these steps to forge an item:

  1. Interact with the Crucible and insert a Mithral Ore. This will allow you to use the Forge Lever to lower the Forge and start crafting. The Mithral Ore will be consumed when the process is complete.
  2. Interact with the Mould Chamber, and insert one of the Moulds you have: Scimitar MouldShield MouldMace MouldSplint MouldLongsword Mould, and Scale Mail Mould. The mould won't be consumed when you craft the item. You can extract the mould by interacting with the lever located next to the Mould Chamber, this will allow you insert a new mold.
  3. Pull the Lava Valve. This will cause the Forge to be surrounded by lava. Evade at all costs being caught up by the lava. Try to position your characters on the big surrounding circles to avoid suffering an immense amount of damage. Also notice that the first time you do this, you will summon a Construct called Grym.
  4. Pull the Forge Lever, this will make a giant column to impact the mould chamber, forging the item you have put into the Mould Chamber in the process.
  5. Once the item is created, use the button located next to the Forge Lever, this will take the Forge back to the High Level area.
  6. You can repeat the process from step 1 by inserting a new Mithral Ore. Remember to swap the Mould if you want to create a different Item.
  7. See Forged Items for more information.

The Adamantine Forge Notes & Tips

  • There exists a bug where the forge crucible can no longer be interactable. This can happen if you remove the forged item during the fight with Grym.
  • There's a bug where the lava won't flow away again, preventing the platform from being raised. This is easily resolved by going into turn-based mode and skipping a few turns.

As someone with even the slightest surface level of knowledge in forging, this part was infuriating lol. And lava doesn't get hot enough to even melt iron, so even if mithral were to have a lower melting point (thus making it potentially a softer material) you could just work it with a regular forge. I know, magic exists so internal consistency and logic must be cast away, but still.

You don't need the rune powder or the oxen to break the debris. At least not the debris that leads up to the moving platforms. Just hit the debris with a blunt weapon or eldrich blast until it is broken. Save boom powder for cheesing fights. So many pages on this site have incorrect info that it feels like the people updating it haven't actually played the game.

For everyone saying "the armor is best".....

          Barbarian, rogue, druid, warlock.
The armor is not the best based on party builds.

Mould is missing completely. Entire quest softlocked. Third quest that is softlocked and my party isn't even halfway through the game. GOTY my butt

As of the time of this comment; another weird bug has cropped up at the forge. After you place the Mould, put the mithril ore in, and trigger the hammer, then the lava, enters the golem, - the lava will bug out, thus you will need to go to Turn Based mode and wait 2 Environmental Turns. Trigger the hammer again, and out pops the first item - if you do NOT remove the Mould that you placed BEFORE you raise the platform again to get the secondary adamantine object made, the platform will bug out, in when you place a mithril and trigger the hammer, the platform will NOT go down. Where as in previous days, you needed to remove the Mould at the TOP of the platform in order to not bug it out. The work-a-round is this; remove the Mould you JUST completed at the BOTTOM of the Platform, THEN raise it up and restart the process for your second. However, the Lava will remain bugged, and hitting the Hammer while the lava is present will stop the platform from raising. Go into turn based mode again, wait 2 environmental turns, and THEN hit the Hammer. Make sure you make a save prior to starting the entire process.

The best peice is the splint mail imo. If you have more than 1 heavy armor user, then make 2 splint mails. If not, then splint mail and scale mail. Bring melee users with 2h mace/maul to fight and gang up the boss as soon as it comes out. If you can 't kill it first round (due to bad rng) then have 1 ranged pull it away as the last shot before boss, then gang him up again with melee. Keep in mind, the forge may bug out if you rely on it to kill boss (it happened to my 2nd playthrough).

You can reach the forge (or Nere) if you have someone with "tavern brawler" perk in your party, just throw any item into the rubble until it breaks it. Perhaps high strength needed to do the trick.

Broken forge Cant do second item -- this is what worked for me:

Put in Mould, ore, pull hammer to go down.
Let in lava and kill boss.
Whack boss with Hammer if you want, but don't kill boss on middle hammer platform.
                    After fight, loot first item.
                    Eject mould.
Now press button to raise back up.
                    Insert second mould
                    Insert second ore
                    Pull hammer to go down
                    Wheel for lava
                    Hammer to finish 2nd.

The key seemed to be to make sure you don't start the second item steps unless the platform is at the top.

I discovered that if you are in combat when you go to release the lava, Grym doesn't spawn. And then even after combat is completed, Grym still won't spawn. I found this while trying to get the bottle spectator to fight him.

Just noticed this isn't posted: you have to release the lava again and heat the guardian (starts glowing red) before hitting it again with the forge

Amazing, run all the way back here to craft my 2nd armor hours later only to find out it's bugged because I picked up the armor during the fight.

You will get a total of 2 adamantine items, you can find 2 slags in the paths around the Ancient Forge area.
I suggest you get the splint and scale mail armors, the weapons are garbage and so is the shield.

Mine bugged out and had two crucible if you click near the bottom of it sometimes you can Access the working one and get your second Item made

I was able to jump across the walkways, bypassing the rubble. Then killed the boss with Blessed, Hasted Karlach with a maul in 2 turns with Bear Rage at level 5. She lost 12 HP. I just made sure to have her attack last, so the boss would maintain aggro on her and not get in range to stomp, breaking concentration on my Warlock.

If your forge is bugged I might know why! My forge was also bugged, but now I know why: Don't do more clicking or moving than necessary!
First use the item you want to forge, second use the metal, third use the lever for the hammer. If your platform doesn't go down you did something wrong, because now the forge might be bugged!

After the platform is at the bottom activate the boss. In my first try I did just one thing different and it bugged 5 things! The other enemies didn't spawn, the forge was bugged, the boss could't be hurt by the hammer, I could't pick up the item and I could't use anything from the forge anymore.

You can access the forge area by completing the lever/moving platforms puzzle even before clearing the rubble

                                    • Anonymous

I lowered the forge after I cleared the duegar, then explored other areas. I came back and i cannot raise it again to perform the sequence properly. The Platform Control just goes "clunk" if I try to use it. How do I raise it from this point?

                                      • Anonymous

I had my mage use the Gaseous Form spell and simply fly to the forge. Once the waypoint is discovered, the rest of the team can be teleported over. Saves a lot of steps. Also the fight with the magical armors can be trivialized by simply throwing the Sussul flowers at them

The whole forge appears to be bugged... It ate my first ore and didn't give me anything in return and after defeating the boss the forge no longer works.

                                          • Anonymous

Grym is 100% resistant to Bludgeoning, so the text indicating an “except Bludgeoning” is incorrect (and I spent time trying to hit him while he was down before checking again).

                                            • I believe you must Long Rest before being able to pour lava again to craft a 2nd (and so on) item(s).

At least that's what happened in my case. I was able to spam it for the Grym fight and then craft 1 item afterwards, but then the valve became inoperable. After a long rest, it became interactable again.

                                              • Anonymous

I was able to clear the rubble on the path to the adamantium forge with the eldrich blast cantrip. I had killed the druegar, oxen, and nere already and used the rune powder vial so I thought I was locked out.

Turns out Eldrich Blast solves everything XD

                                                • Anonymous

If you're unable to open the lava valve a second time, going to camp and then leaving camp fixed it for me

                                                  • Anonymous

I accidently clicked on the upper floors of the place while exploring grymforge at the start. The mc passed through the rocks blocking the way due to some lag, but no the party. Then I started running around and found a couple places where it is possible to access the teleport rune near the forge without the need to remove the rocks. One is near the levers that move the plataform where the structure is collapsed. The other is just around the rune jumping through a big chasm

                                                    • Anonymous

I forged one item, it spawned a boss, the boss died on top of the forge (i slammed it down on him) and now the forge is unusable because hes laying on it (i assume). I was only able to forge one item, even though i have another mithral ore, I can't access the middle area because hes laying there.

                                                      • Anonymous

If you get stuck on the platform and the lava wont leave turn on turn-based time and skip a few rounds, the lava will leave after a few "environmental turn"

                                                              • Anonymous

Tried to give myself multiple Forged Items with cheats, but the Lava Valve gets stuck after the 2nd use. So it seems like you can only get 2 items out of it.

                                                                • Anonymous

                                                                  • Anonymous

But in the Lava Pools you Is an Adamantine Chest, would be cool if you could put it into the forge and get another Adamantine Weapon/Armor.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Open the box, open inventory, place mound in box, the forge has a door that’s the circle in the center, once items are loaded in pull the level to the upper right lowering the forge . Once lowered turn the wheel causing lava to heat it up, then pull the lever smashing the circle, the craft will then open and you can get the item. After you defeat the protector this process can be repeated if you have mithril ores. I’ve only found two and crafted scale and splint which are both armors. I hope there is an ore for each mold
