Find the Missing Letters Walkthrough

In the north part of Rivington, opposite to the Open Hand Temple, is the Sword Coast Couriers. During Act 1, if you found Scratch and Gomwick in the north part of the Forest, you can bring up Gomwick's demise to the person in charge. Speak to the man behind the counter, Danzo Arkwright, and you'll have the following dialogue choices:

  1. I'm sorry to tell you - I found the body of one of your couriers. He carried this letter.
  2. Wait - delivery not guaranteed?
  3. I'm not sending anything. You can drop the sales routine.
  4. It's rare to meet someone so cheerful these days. Why the good mood.
  5. Leave.

If you pick the first option, you'll give him the Personal Note and let him know about Gomwick. He'll then explain that with Gomwick gone, he's been attempting to send letters by pigeons, but these pigeons have been getting attacked as well. This will start the Find the Missing Letters Quest.

The missing letters are nearby, found on a nest on top of the Open Hand Temple. You can get there by climbing some vines to the side of the temple or climbing a ladder up to the top of the bell tower, then jumping down to the roof. You'll encounter a Tressym guarding a shiny ring and a stack of letters. Engage in conversation using one of the following options:

  1. What are you doing here, kitty?
  2. Quite a nice ring you have there. What are tou going to do with it?
  3. From the look of those letters, one might guess you were responsible for the post house's missing pigeons.
  4. Leave.

Select the third option, and the cat acknowledges its connection to the missing pigeons. Proceed with the following questions:

  1. These letters are important. You shouldn't be eating their messengers.
  2. If pigeon is your second-favourite, what's your first?
  3. Happy hunting, then.

Select the first option, and the cat wonders if you're ready to depart. Respond with:

  1. [INTIMIDATION] Leave these pigeons alone or I'll eat you.
  2. [PERSUASION] I'm not leaving 'til you agree to stop hunting these pigeons.
  3. [DECEPTION] There's much better aviary across town, if you've already picked over the choice cuts here.
  4. Enjoy your feast.

Choose the third option, and if pass the DC 15 Deception Check, the cat will believe you and allow you to loot the Bundle of Letters nestled within its nest.

Definitely a bug with opening the letters, tried all characters and reloading saves and even not going for the rolls, no matter what I do, no payout from Danzo even though the dialogue and animations show him handing over the gold

      • The tressym turns into a vendor later in the game if you do this quest correctly.

The tressym has a relationship with Gale. If you bring him along, there will be an option where Gale tells the Tressym not to kill any more pigeons and the tressym won't. If you use Gale to do this, you will lose the option to shoo the tressym to another rooftop, which means the tressym won't show up on the rooftop of Devil's Fee as a vendor a little later in the game. Tressym sells "Hat of the Sharp Caster", a nice caster hat that rerolls 1 or 2.

        • On the second floor of the Post House there are three pigeons. If you talk to one of them the bird will ask "Name and rank?", I told him I was a lieutenant and that I've found letters carried by some of his birds. The bird then proceed to ask how they died and if you tell him "they fought to the last feather against a truly formidable foe" Lae'zel will get an inspiration point and 135 xp.

Open the bundle and read the letters. You can blackmail him into giving you more gold. I got 625 for telling him to give me everything they gave him. It was an intimidation check of 18? Maybe it was less.

            • When you find Tara here's some approval/disapproval options that occur for Halsin, Gale, and Astarion (if these 3 are in your party) if you ask her to stop eating the pigeons:

              Astarion - Disapproves
Halsin & Gale - Both approve

              • Anonymous

If Gale is in your party and you pass a perception check or you speak with the tressym as him you find out that this tressym is no other than his familiar Tara. He can convince her to stop eating the pigeons without passing any check and she will give him a Ring of blink

                • Anonymous

You can ask the pigeon on the upper floor in the adjacent room about the missing birds and he will point you to the rooftop in the west. Karlach will also get inspired (Enlisted Avian) for "Meeting Commander Lightfeather"

For anyone struggling to find their way onto the roof, the ladder to the bell tower is behind the door with the plaque saying its the belfry. The vines meanwhile can be found through entering the kitchen and exiting through the norh-facing door then taking a right. There's a dirt mound that can be found before the vines with a Survival check.

                    • Anonymous

If you read the letters, you'll find out Danzo is corrupt and you can blackmail him for a big reward. I'm also trying to find any authority to turn in the letters instead of blackmailing him.

                      • Anonymous

If Gale is in your party and succeeds a perception check on the roof, you get a completely different set of dialogue options, and also an item.

                        • Anonymous

Sold them accidentally, so if you are like me you can buy them back if you can recall whom you sold them to. The names of the items are:
"Bundle of Letters" which can be opened to produce"
                          Letter about Taxes
                          Anonymous letter
                          Postmaster Shipment Inquiry
