Felt let down by this he claims if you get him a brain he'll augment your power, here i'm thinking oh cool some tasty new power. Cutscene plays about him unlocking apart of my illithid powers. cutscene ends and turns out he just gives me a ring? i mean i guess that's an augment to my power but what was with all the mind probing seeing as he has the ring prior to quest ending, it's just a bit misleading. Best route give him a body, then kill him for quest and kill XP.

Even if you don't kill anyone (like take a corpse from the pit near the courier) when you complete this task, you break your oath (at least with an oath of devotion pally). So if you search a method to break your oath without killing anyone this is a easy task.

I heard initiative rolls near the Elfsong Tavern, somehow the patrol saw the Mind Flayer and started combat. You could see a couple of phrases (from the Illithid) in the log.
He wasn't hostile to me (fed him earlier) and just jumped in for the killing blow (140 xp to party) at the end (never entered combat).
The guards had nothing to say. However he dropped "Mind Flayer Brain" (with an orange outline) but I didn't do anything then and there; The Emperor said something about it and how it could be useful.
Later, I consumed it, and it did nothing... However my character said (in narrator text on the screen iirc): "It's no good - it won't be (sic.) any use now. It's overripened thanks to your feeding."
I have no clue what this means or what they are talking about and I'm loading. Feel free to experiment and reply with what this may be, Googling yielded little results...

I had the body on a different character and still got the quest done without ever dumping the body there.
Realized this when Karlach was suddenly stuck somewhere and not with the party... (overencumbered)

Just bring him a corpse from the fight between the stone lord and nine thugs. Or open up your chest of corpses you obviously keep at camp.

You can pickpocket the Ring of Truthfulness from his sleeping body along with a note about his transformation and then just kill him for the tadpole without ever needing to murder a human for him.

Picking up a "Refugee" NPC doesn't seem to work, if you right click the corpse and select "Pick Up" it doesn't appear in the inventory.
It worked for me with a named NPC though.

you can use the body from the graveyard next to the circus, stops you needing to kill any innocents

Gives you one tadpole, and Inspiration for Noble when you bring him a corpse (just get one from the well). If you cant carry one, drink a strength potion

you can just kill a random bystander halfling/gnome and bring the corpse to him

you can just kill a random bystander gnome/halfling and carry the corpse in your inventory
There's really no good reason to feed this thing, unless you want it to go out and kill more innocent people. Killing it right away will give you a tadpole *and* the ring the mind flayer gives you if you feed it. It's the only way to get both rewards.
