  • We found the captured tieflings. They won't last long in Moonrise Towers. We should find a way to help them escape.

Speak to the gnomes.

  • The gnomes have a plan to break out of the prison. We should speak to them.

Protect the gnomes.

  • The gnomes are on their way to free the tiefling captives. We need to protect them.

Assist the tieflings' escape through the tunnels.

  • The tieflings escaped using a boat found in the tunnels of Moonrise Towers.

Rescue the Tieflings Walkthrough

If you saved the tieflings in Act 1, then once you arrive at the Last Light Inn in the Shadow-Cursed lands you will find that not all of them have made it. This quest will involve finding the captive tieflings being held in Moonrise Towers and helping them escape from the prison.

The Moonrise Towers are located in the Southwest corner of the Shadow-Curse Lands Region. You will likely need to complete the quest Seek Protection from the Shadow Curse in order to enter the region as without the buff from the item you receive during that quest you will have a very hard time reaching this area.

When you reach the Towers, you will be stopped and forced into a dialogue with a True Soul guarding the front door. The True Soul will direct you to the main audience chamber as part of the Main Quest Infiltrate Moonrise Towers, but you can ignore this and go straight to the dungeons without talking to Ketheric Thorm. Look in a room to the west of the Audience Chamber with a blood-stain trail leading to a set of stairs. Take these stairs down to reach the Moonrise Towers Prison.

Heading to the Moonrise Towers Prison

In order to find the Tieflings that were imprisoned in Moonrise Towers, you will find a stair leading to this area at (X:-175 Y:-193). Interact with the stairs here and this will take you to the Moonrise Towers Prison. If you still have a good relationship with the cultists or haven't started a fight with them, the guards will let you in without a fight. Make sure to explore each room here if you want to stock up on scrolls and elixirs. You will also find barrels and chests that you can open. As you head into the prison rooms, you will find a Scrying Eye guarding. With this sentinel, you have to make sure not to do anything suspicious while it watches in that area.

You will find the Tiefling Lia standing at the prison cell with who you can engage in a conversation, this however, will be put to a stop by one of the guards watching, forbidding you from speaking to them. You will be given 3 options to respond:

  1. [DECEPTION] I have permission from Balthazar. Ask him.
  2. [PERSUASION] What are the prisoners going to do? Talk me to death.
  3. My apologies- won't happen again.

Attempting the Persuasion check will require you to pass a DC of 14. When successful, you can continue talking to Lia and she tells you that the gnomes are up to something and they're working together. Urging you to find these gnomes to talk to them. Continue to go around the cells and you will find Wulbren, who is curious about how you were able to order the guard successfully. He wants to know what is your business with them. You can offer to help him for free or for a fee or tell him that you want to torment him.

If you choose to help them for free, he will want to know the reason behind this. You can attempt the Persuasion check that will require you to pass a DC of 10. Your turn to respond:

  1. Barcus told me you were here, and asked me to help.
  2. [PERSUASION] I know the Tieflings imprisoned here- I want to break you all out.
  3. [PERSUASION] My mind is my own- the Absolute has no control over me.
  4. [DECEPTION] I'm an undercover agent for the Flaming Fist.
  5. Fine, die in here for all I care.

When successful, Wulbren will tell you about his plan which involves looking for tools. He will ask for you to hand them anything that can break rocks and also make sure that no one will see you helping them. (Needs a blunt weapon like morningstar etc. Even a Salami will do) He also tells you that the Warden robbed them of their tools, and you can start looking from there. Locating the Tieflings and Wulbren will update the quests for these characters in your journal.

(Give Wulbren some weapon you wont miss, like a Salami)

You will find the Warden in their room at (X:572 Y:-655), and ask her questions about confiscated items to reveal that she is hiding these in the office above. You may also attempt the Intelligence check which will require you to pass a DC of 13, this will reveal that levers behind her desk can open the doors of the cells, and the larger lever is used to trigger the alarm.

With her back turned against you, you can sneak to go up the ladder. However, there is a Scrying Eye in this area so it's not advisable to steal the tools under its watchful eyes. The moment you get spotted, she will confront you to explain yourself:

  1. Acquiesce and follow to prison.
  2. Try to talk your way out of it.
  3. Try to convince them you belong here.
  4. Perhaps some gold would make up for my little indiscretion? (1238)
  5. Try to buy your way in. (4952)
  6. Attack.

Choosing the second option will you further choices which requires you to pass a DC of 15:

  1. [DECEPTION] Would you look at that- my map's upside down. I should have turned right at that crossroads.
  2. [INTIMIDATION] Let me be, or you won't live to regret it.
  3. [PERSUASION] Haven't you ever been turned around on your way to a date with destiny?

Another option is to fight The Warden since this area is unseen from the level above. Make sure to destroy the Scrying Eye in this area so that the others will not be alerted. After this, you can now search the office where items are being stored. Make sure to loot the Warden's body to retrieve the Spellcrux Amulet and the Moonrise Guard's Key from her.

The chests above are locked but you can unlock them by doing a Dexterity check which requires you to pass a DC of 14-16, which varies on the difficulty of the chests. With The Warden gone, you can free the tieflings and Wulbreg by interacting with the levers behind the desk. However, there are still guards nearby so this will commence a battle between them and your party. It is best to take care of the nearby guards before handing them the tools so that they can escape through the tunnels.

Follow them through the tunnels by using the walls that they have broken through. You will find a boat docked at (X:572 Y:-577) and their party will take their leave. This will complete your quests Rescue Wulbren and Rescue the Tieflings.

Now that the prisoners have escaped Moonrise Towers Prison, you will be able to complete both Rescue the Tieflings and Rescue Wulbren here.

How to unlock Rescue the Tieflings

  • Rescue the Tieflings can be unlocked by speaking to Alfira or Rolan in the Last Light Inn in the Shadow-Cursed Lands

Rescue the Tieflings Notes & Tips

  • When rescuing Rolan, keep in mind that you can throw potions at allies to heal them, and this works on Rolan as well. You may be able to give him more restored hit points in a single round if you have a martial class like a Fighter, Barbarian, or Ranger in your party who can attack multiple times (and therefore can throw multiple potions in one turn if needed)
  • Inside the prison, the jailer's room have 6 levers, one for each room and a bigger one which is the alarm. if you open the jails, the NPCs will escape through the main entrance, triggering a lot of fights. Opening them is recommended only after they broke through the weakened stone wall and went to the escape boat. One of the cells (number 4) contains a green-hued hole that leads to a level below, giving you an answer about the tadpoles and weird flesh noises inside the tower.
  • When escorting them on the boat, the quest will be completed for both Rescue the Tieflings and Rescue Wulbren.

This quest is BUGGED, and Larian still has not fixed it! Do NOT open the cell doors via the levers first, or you will not be able to complete the quest and reap the reward.

On honour mode, without doing any dialogue before-hand, I broke down wulbrens wall then ran to teiflings to break theirs but before I could, wulbren started dialogue with me. Since I was in a rush I chose "shut up and get on the boat" so I could run and break down the tieflings' wall before guards aggrod but wulbren hoped on the boat and dipped without them and then all the tiefflings just ran to fight guards out of my reach and died. Then my game crashed when I went to last light inn.

        • Anonymous

In the prison, I triggered a fight, and ended up killing everyone there. Then, I opened the jails because there were no more enemies left. The whole crowd rushed outside where about 4 guards. In the fight, they running at enemies point-blank and stared at them, begging to be killed. I did everything I could, surrounded the last guard with my party members so that he couldn't escape. However, the tieflings, in their turn, approached him up close, and, in general, the last guard with 8 HP oneshoted two tieflings in a single turn.
Alfira only gave me 400 gold for that and no robe.

          P.S. Enjoying Warlock without robe.

Can anyone answer me about Danis and Bex? Remember Danis have a moment of weirdness passed after returning and then they head out for a walk? after everything ended I went back to Last night inn only see Danis standing alone next to a house, where did his lover Bex go? Anyone found out about this hidden plot?

Gotta be honest after finding out that doing the Nightsong stuff shuts you out of doing the rescues I had to take a break for a few days lol

At least on PS5 Act 2 really starts to become a mess. Several quests like Lifting the Shadow Curse and breaking the contract for Raphaels enemy are broken, pop-in and missing textures become more frequent issues, and the Nightsong thing just kinda capped it off. They should warn you before you even enter the mausoleum and do the gauntlet, not wait until the end, and even then, it's a really poor warning as it mentions environmental changes but it says nothing about time-sensitive quests disappearing.

is it possible to get this item if something dark urge related happens to one of the important tieflings in this quest? I'm playing a warlock and this item is kind of insane

                • If Alfira is dead due something you really couldn't control in Act 1, there's no Alfira to give you the very nice rewards for this quest, but you can complete it without a reward.

This is absolute (heh) garbage. So i need to go first to the Moonrise Tower, which the game tells very clearly that the place is the main objective in ACT 2, so i can rescue them to get that Potent Robe which is very powerful, but why the **** would i go directly to the end or the main objective of the map/ACT and not explore the map first? This is the second time i lost the chance to get this robe because i went to Shar's temple and for some stupid reason Shar's temple is more important than going to Moonrise Towers! Why the hell would i go to Moonrise Towers then leave Moonrise Towers and then come back again?! It doesn't make any ****ing sense this stupid quest and **** this game for making you lose that gear.

                    • Anonymous

I completed the quest and brought Rolan alive after the shadows, and yet the completed quest says "The Tieflings are safe, but Rolan is nowhere to be found at Last Light Inn..." like no ****, the one who gave me the 400 gold was his ghost lmao

                      • Anonymous

I did this quest and for some reason they hadn't broken the wall in the cell so they ran to the exit with all the guards and died 10/10 had to reload

                        • Anonymous

You need to speack to 3 tiefling to close the quest: 1) Alfira for the generic tiefling rescue, 2) Roland for save his brother/sister e 3) Becks (near the river) for save her husband. After that the quest close.

I completed this questline and now it says "talk to the tieflings at the Inn" and even though I did, it just won't get marked "completed". What might I be missing?

                              WARNING and SPOILER ALERT:
I don't know if it is a bug, or the way I did that, but during the rescue I manage to get everybody to safery without alerting the guards or the warden. This gave me 2 outcomes:

                              1) If you later get back to the prison break area behind the cell, you will automatically aggro the guards and start a fight.
                              2) Since the warden and these guards are alive, they late joined the fight at the Moonrise Tower during the assault to Ketheric Thorm, making this path even harder.

That being said, it's advided for the player to kill the guards here during the prison break

When i attacked the moonrise towers together with Jaheira there were no tieflings in the cells. Is this a bug or was i too late?

                                • Anonymous

I literally completed it, spoke to them all at the inn, and again at the towers before the end of ACT 2, the game said the quest was completed, then in ACT 3 it says it isn't completed anymore and I can't go back to the ACT 2 zone to re-complete it. This quest sucks.

                                  • Anonymous

Alfira is just straight up missing for me. The quest tells me to talk to the Tieflings after the rescue and Lissandra just stands next to an empty seat. Alfira didn't die or anything like that either. No ****ing clue what's going on or whether I can even complete the quest now.

                                    • Anonymous

I solo killed every enemy in Moonrise Towers before rescuing the prisoners. Now they're just standing outside the jail area, not moving at all.

Can't finish the quest because they're still "In danger" despite no enemy being alive in Moonrise.

The fact that I'm being punished for being an efficient killer is utter bullshit.

there are soooo many bugs in this quest, like if you bust Wulbren out yourself, he'll go up and start punching the tiefling's wall barehanded.

or if you tell Wulbren at the end to just stay adrift, instead of heading to Last Light, the game just makes them go there anyway and never mentions it

or that none of the tieflings recognize Wyll

or that none of the guards care if you go into one of the cages

etc etc. be creative with this quest at your peril, I had to redo it like 3 times

                                        • Anonymous

I was a bit annoyed the Guards seem to cheat, so I took my sweet time to do the jail break.
Now, what I mean with cheating, I stacked a lot of crates, barrels and boxes near the gnome wall. Once the Gnomes were all out of the Jail, I placed them at the opening so the Guards couldn't get through. But they somehow clipped through anyway (it took them slightly longer than usually though)

So, what did I do then? I lurked the warden to the drop-hole with a spider familiar. She hates spiders. When she had the correct position, I had Karlach Sparta-Kicking (shoving) her down the hole.
Sadly, she survived with 58/96 HP. But there's also some bad triggering. When I start a fight with her in the hole, the other guards also join the fight.
So instead, I looked who else didn't like spiders, and the next target was Adept Ghulen, though, he didn't even get a single damage point...
Anyway, next victim: Zealot Nadi (he was sadly the first to climb the ladder instead.... after a bit of sheparding, I got him too where I wanted him to be.
now I got 3 guards down there. Only the patroling Guard Keris was left.
Since I don't have anyone proficient with an instrument, I'm not able to distract her with that. So was else to do?
Tried to build a wall out of crates, barrels again, added candelabrums (or candelabra?). It took me a while, but I managed to build a wall which took her at least some time to get through. (she either jumps or climbs through, but the pathing is disturbed long enough.
But somehow, I can't get them to leave without leaving myself.... Wulbren only complains about how it takes to untow the boat, which is already untowed.... Even when speaking to him, all he says, he should have been in charge of the boat.... Why can't I simply tell them to leave. Sure, I could simply come back anyway, but I don't want to leave with the boat....

Also, if Keris sees them escaping, ALL guards from below suddenly appeared as well...

This is spoilery and I apologize to those not looking for spoilers, but the individuals are not marked in order to fully complete the quest.

If you have rescued everyone, you will need to talk to Bex/Danis at the river towards the north, Alfira/Lakrissa inside the Inn, and Rolan/Lia/Cal towards the back of the Inn.

Note: You will need to rescue Rolan separately if he is still out searching for his siblings.

Roland was already zombified when I went to him and I can't find a way to bring him back. On top of that, I can't cast speak to the dead because I have to kill him, and now I can't get info on wylls father. Am I missing something or is the quest uncompletable?

                                              • Anonymous

Roland fight can initiate without triggering combat- so he can die without you even knowing it is a thing- if you walk past him on the high road.

It’s not mentioned but there does seem to be a timer unrelated to the gauntlet of Shar. After I broke them out of prison the quest ended for me and talking to Danis indicated that Bex was dead - not sure how long you have to complete it fully or if it’s just a bug.

                                                  • Anonymous

Why the F*CK aren't the individual Tieflings marked? So many STUPID quest design decisions in this act. Halsin is buggy. Thaniel is buggy. The prison escape quest is buggy. This quest is buggy.

                                                    Unbelievable.

SUper bugged and lazy quest. I used a jump spell to vault myself up close to where the half-orc is guarding. I ventured around and found a boat. I broke the chains and interacted with it. At this point I havent even spoken to the prisoners yet. I get asked if I want to sail off or stay. I click STAY. The screen fades to black and i'm at last light with INVISIBLE prisoners. The guard asks for them to get tested. The game just assumes too much, clearly the the flags for this quest havent been done correctly.

Annoying bug back at Last Light. The 3 Tiefling friends seem to be locked into an animation and separated, so I can't complete the questline.

The AI gnomes and tieflings for this quest are REALLY stupid. Go behind the prison, get both walls to low HP and break the chains on the boat (if you don't want to give them your weapon, the gnome's hammer is in the warden's tower). Afterwards, go into the tower, make sure you close the doors, and kill the warden, along with any scrying eyes. As long as the doors are closed, no other enemies will be aggro'd. After that, find the scrying eyes rotating through the prison and kill them and the stragglers. This is much easier once you hit level 8, since you're fighting level 8 enemies who have an extra feat. Finally, tell the gnomes to escape and there'll be no fight at all.

(spoiler) the prison break is extremly easy if you just get behind their cells, break the boat chains, and afterwards break the cells walls at the same time with 2 characters. (i did it with 1 bomb and 1 aldrich blast). no need to give them any weapons and such, and if u're quick enough u can probably get away without the guards and warden to aggro.

Went to Shar's gauntlet first, killed Balthasar and freed the Nightsong. When i raided Moonrise towers the prison was empty and the quest was stuck. Not sure if this is a consequence or quest bug.

This prison break quest line have mind of it own. Here's how I did it:
I start to talking to to Tiefiling's, then the Gnome's, Gnome's have plan you see: Bust through wall with blunt weapon (you can choose which one you give em, well.. THROW at em.) and while they are at it you need to distract or keep guard busy while they escape.
How I started was I made Shadowheart a Bard and went to where Zeolot Navi is (west corner of map) and waited patrolling guard Adept Keris come to there.
Then I started playing sick tunes, now that Keris is distracted, then I started hunting down two patroling Crying Eye's with our dandy Rogue Astarion, when they were out of picture our plan begin:
Speak to the gnome and he start to hammer down wall, then they move to Tieflings cage (However... Some odd reason they just stand there... Lazy a****les) so I needed to give em helping hand:
By blowing the wall down with my Magic Missiles (but this was not nearly enough) so I went west corner (place where Shadowheart is playing her serenade) and used "Flight" spell on Karlach our lovable foulmouthed barbarian to get up and navigated to location where gnomes are SUPPOSE to free Tieflings, and start hammering down wall.
Then AI decided to work and they flee to boat and start striking chains down (this is going to take awhile) when they are done,
you have options to go with em or just let em go and go back to where Shadowheart playing her tunes.
I stop to playing ofc and guards then return to their routine. Soon they see that prisoners have been escaped and try to chase after em (Poor fools can't catch em now! :D)

(Do not go inside cages, this will engage combat if they see you.)
But this most pacifistic way to do this guest. (Except those Scrying Eyes But hey! Who cares about em am I right?)
