Punish the Wicked Walkthrough
- Punish the Wicked begins when you approach He Who Was at the Ruined Battlefield (around X128, Y110). You'll see him asking the corpse of Madeline where her guilt lies, to which it responds with the name of the brewery she once worked at. If you ask him what's going on, he won't really answer your question but comment on how you're exploring the lands without fear of the darkness. The white raven will ask if you can serve as the dead's voice. If you ask him to clarify, he'll explain that the dead woman in front of you backstabbed her patrons as she worked at a bar in these lands. They all died because of her, and he says her victims must be avenged. If you retort that she's dead and has nothing more to pay, he'll explain that death is not the end yet. He'll say that he wants physical proof of her betrayals so that he can then summon her spirit and make her stand trial. If you are a Warlock, you can try to ask him to teach you the magic that he uses, to which he says he could share the ancient secrets of his magic, but only with someone he deems as an ally. He'll then ask if you're up for helping him. Accepting the task will have him bid you to find Madeline's ledger in The Waning Moon (in Reithwin Town, east to the Tollhouse), the brewery where she worked, and bring it to him.
- You can find Madeline's ledger in The Waning Moon, to the left of the bar where you'll interact with Thisobald Thorm. You'll have to defeat him by passing Skill checks or Saving Throws to either survive drinking with him or pretending to drink and then regaling him with stories for three rounds. Afterward, you can find Madeline's Ledger on your left with a successful Perception check revealing a loose plank on the floor (x-223, y-78).
- When you head back to the Ruined Battlefield you can speak to He Who Was to turn over the ledger. Apparently, Madeline tipped the Dark Justiciars about her friends and ran away as they were killed. He'll then begin to channel Madeline's spirit onto him, and your task will be to have her undergo her trial and punish her if necessary. She'll reveal that the Dark Justiciar promised her she was just going to talk to her but instead had them stab each other to death. You'll have three choices next, all with Persuasion checks - have her stab herself (DC 14). call her a coward (DC 10), or placate her and say that it wasn't her fault (DC 10). Choosing the third option will result in a fight against He Who Was and his Raven.
- He-who-was is a level 6 Shader-Kai Gloom Weaver.

If I throw He Who Was's corpse, my character becomes unable to move. I can TP, and get pushed, but not move or use any actions/bonus actions Not sure if saving and reloading would fix it as I just loaded a save before I talked to him. Also, I cannot pick up his body and place it in my inventory.

Oath of Devotion breaks if you cause her to stab "He Who Was at the Ruined Battlefield"

>perform vague, questionable seance
>say that I can't really blame this long-dead woman for acting in self-preservation towards the sharran gestapo
>guy freaks out and throws a fit
>tries to kill me
>holy **** this guy's lost his mind
>did I miss something? did I do the quest wrong?
>kill him in self defense
>read note on his corpse
>"holy **** dude have you lost your mind"
i love this game
great source of Astarion Approval
have Madeline stab herself twice
The gloves suck btw, and this guy is just an butthole from Shadowfell who is literally acting rogue because he's a sadist

Throwing He Who Was (his corpse at least and into the arcane circle) consistently bugs the PC so you won't be able to do ANYTHING (except fast travel and resting) with it. All buttons gets greyed out.
In short: Do not throw his corpse

For "chaotic good" players or torn players (or anyone else I guess):
1) This guy just wants to drink in their anguish. He appears to be a sadist.
2) The dead woman seems - you guessed it - in anguish. She hates herself for it and takes shows heavy regret when calling her a coward. She may be just stupid instead of just a coward.
3) The gloves summon a named raven, which you can not interact with in any way (just like a normal summon) and you HAVE TO HAVE THE GLOVES EQUIPPED to keep the raven around or it will disappear. Need I remind you a raven MAY blind once in a blue moon, a very situational debuff at best.
I hope that helps anyone torn between decisions.

There's no subsection for The Waning Moon Inn...
Is there any point in keeping the zombies alive?
I'm sorry I won't test it myself but I'll still be curious. I saw another comment somewhere that Thisobald doesn't change, but I don't care about that. Was wondering if it was possible to "save" the zombies or if there's anything more to them than just wandering XP.

If you are a paladin blaming her for the deaths of her friends can break your oath.

I want to spare the woman's spirit, but the elf hints we may meet again.
Will we meet him further into the game?

Locking an actual quest item behind a perception check is a BAD design. Usually i accept if i fail a perception check but an important quest item is gone if you fail one; after a big fight? Really?

She's guilty she claimed the Dark Justiciars intimidated her into spying but her corpse holds a decent amount of gold implying she did it for profit.

For anyone miffed that he just ignores Turn Based-mode on and teleports away at the end when you wanted to attack him, there is a way:
You can get both the Raven Gloves, quest-XP AND his kill-XP if you have a character outside of the conversation with the potential to oneshot him.
Waited until the last two sentences of the cutscene played and then switched to my Pala, set prompts to auto (Luck of the Far Realms + Divine Smite on Crit II).
Cutscene ends automatically and when the reward window popped up quickly clicked it away and then blasted him with Thunderous Strike II + Divine Smite on Crit II (which was enough for his 98 HP even on Tactician) and got the 150 kill-XP.
There will be an "you attacked me"-scene in-between which shouldn't be spacebar-spammed away too quickly bc then your talking character gets stuck talking to nothing forever - just needs the right timing.
No corpse though as it probably portaled somewhere in pieces and that rude bird still got away.

Fun fact, it seems a Vengance Oath isn't broken if you give the Vengance option beforehand.
"When punishment is needed, my hand will not shy from the blade"
(I did get the oath break when sparing her but choosing other options)
presumably because you explicitly said "when punishment is needed," you judged that "Vengeance" was not needed

What a load of horseshit. She's guilt and a coward and it breaks oaths if you side with the dude.
Another piece of the frequent awful Larian quest design. If you fail the Perception check for the plank, it's seemingly over. Garbage.
