How to defeat Grym in BG3
You have to take into account a few things when fighting Grym:
- When you activate the lava and Grym appears, your terrain will be limited to the Circles surrounding the "anvil" part of the forge. Avoid passing through the lava at all costs!
- When Grym is standing on lava, it gains a status effect called Superheated. Only when this status effect is active you can damage the golem. This will cause Grym to become Vulnerable to Bludgeoning damage, lower his Armour Class and be Resistant to Thunder, Cold and Force. He will remain Immune to all other elements.
- Grym will target the most recent character that struck it before its turn and set them as "Prime Target". This can be exploited to use the anvil to deal massive damage to Grym. It is not necessary to have damaged it, only to have a successful attack roll.
- Position a character near the Forge Lever and, another one near the anvil's strike position. Lure Grym there by attacking it with that character and, once the golem is in position, pull the Forge Lever. The anvil strikes down, dealing around 100 points of damage and leaving the golem Prone.
- Once Grym loses enough HP, some Fire Mephits will appear and attack (attracted by using the loud hammer likely).
- If the Lava is removed, interact with the Lava Valve to refill the chamber and force Grym to walk over it.
- Grym won't take damage from the Anvil if he doesn't have the Superheated status effect.

BG3 Grym Notes & Tips
- Command: Approach is an excellent Spell to lure Grym to the anvil without being attacked.
- Heat Metal will make Grym Superheated, lowering the Armour Class and Resistances.
- One can position any Smokepowder bombs/barrels/satchels they have near the gap in the walkway by the grate where Grym spawns before the fight and blow them up first turn to get a minor jump on damage.

You can trigger the lever and lava using range weapons. So, split your party and let one person with misty step trigger the event. Use misty step to the broken stairs and lure Grym using summon weapon at center. Trigger the lever and lava as needed.

If you're struggling with this fight in Honour mode, 2 Clerics spamming Command: Grovel every turn after applying Bane to him can give two Bludgeon-based melee free turns to whale on him, bypassing his Legendary Action.
- Anonymous
If you're trying to crush it as a giant owlbear remember to crouch before jumping. Colossus elixir alone reached 846 damage, with enlarge stacked on top, 8630 damage

Just won on honor using hammer. Summons are super useful for triggering AOO or luring Grym to the middle. Made a hireling Druid for this fight only, 100% worth it. Druids "Plant Growth" are insane on him. Dont be afraid of putting people up on the anvil with him, they can always be ressurected but most of the time they only get downed, even if they get hit by a 30000 tons anvil.
- Anonymous
He almost never will end his turn on the anvil if he has movement left. Pointless unwinnable fight with lvl 5 characters on Tactician.
- Anonymous
its a level 10 construct now. And if you try to stealth outside of combat you have so much time (i think a few mins) before the lava leaves and when the lava is gone you'll have to rely on heat metal otherwise its a TPK since grym becomes immune to all damage when not super heated.
- Anonymous
When he is softened by the lava he can take good amounts of damage from the druid owlbear's shape crushing flight ability from the platform high above the boss arena (in one trial he took around 150 damage and in another around 40 damage, both without using enlarge on the owlbear which could potentially one shot Grym). Owlbear rupture ground AOE attack also deals damage to Grym when softened by lava, and you can finish Grym off by bludgeoning him with a staff/mace (e.g. with Lae'zel), since he is vulnerable to bludgeoning damage

Honor Mode: OH BOYO. After taking damage, once per turn, he gains 10 temporary health. While he has this shield, he gains double movement. Once the shield breaks, he loses the bonuses movement speed and detonates, dealing thunder damage around him(possibly also applies knockback, needs confirming).
Tip: Using the hammer still works and does NOT give him the buffs. Knock off the temp HP as soon as possible, disengage tanks if you need to. Half way through the fight, 6 mephits show up. They're low hp, kill em quick and focus Gyrm. Slow spells are good if you don't have the damage to break the shield. Kite and repeat. Don't forget to turn the lava back on every 2-3 turns to give sheer his invulnerability.
- Anonymous
For some reason perilous stakes doesn't grant vulnerability to all types of damage. Disintegrate still does 50-100 instead of doubled damage
- Anonymous
This fight can be skipped by entering turn based mode when you hit the lava lever.
- Anonymous
Don't bother with the massive hammer in the centre, just beat his ass with bludgeoning damage.
- Anonymous
If you're gonna use the hammer on Grym it's a good idea to have Shadowheart using Sanctuary right next to the lava level, that way even if she is closer to Grym he can't target her and she'll already be there when it's lava-lever time, saving an action.
- Anonymous
this fight is sooooooo stupid because your chars dont even TRY to avoid the lava when moving.
- Anonymous
This guy has no ranged options so tavern brawler can throw **** from above as he sits and can do nothing.
- Anonymous
Twinned Hasted two Tavern Brawlers throwing hammers at Gyrm = dead by turn 2 or 3.
- Anonymous
If you encounter a bug where you cannot turn the wheel to re-add the lava, this is a bug. Restart the fight, working theory is it happens when you quick-save during the cutscene where GRYM appears.
- Anonymous
Wish the devs or wiki expanded on the Grym's lore, even as minimal of a boss as he is in the grand scheme of things.
Makes me feel of a Church Grim from norse mythos, except- like. A Forge Grim.
- Anonymous
Berserker Frenzied Throw can knock him down, making him relatively easy to manage(throw light hammers, as they deal bludgeoning damage). Stacking Reverberation to trigger a knock down works as well.
- Anonymous
If you can get him partly on the crucible, you can prone lock by alternating smash then lava wheel to superheat again in same round.
- Anonymous
pro tip: you can activate the lever and wheel with ranged attacks which makes luring him a lot easier
- Anonymous
no one in history has liked a bad gimmick fight. this is a terrible gimmick fight

Dullest boss fight in gaming history. Thanks Larian for wasting my time.
- Anonymous
Use Scratch to activate the lava valve or the lever. Seriously.
- Anonymous
Tip: if you have a fighter in your party, equip them with a war hammer. I used the uncommon Doom Hammer weapon and took Grym out extremely quickly without ever having to use the forge hammer.
- Anonymous
In-game lore said that the forge guardian has no weakness except for a particular weapon that was disassembled into three pieces.
And that weapon is a very rare ice quarterstaff with Ray of Ice cantrip and ‘Chilled’ status on frost damage.
- Anonymous
Btw, Heatmetal doesn't make Grym superheated. Attempted, tried and failed.
- Anonymous
mourning frost key item against grym boss! :D actally it is... you get by the dark elves during adamantine quest so just use ray of frost cantrip and the grym boss become VULNERABLE AGAINST ICE!!! it's a huge advantage!!!
- Anonymous
Heat metal does not make him super heated. Either they patched it or I'm bugged. I tried losing concentration and recasting but it didn't work

Additional word of advice for fighting this boss
His aoe slam attack seems to force cancel concentration, as the log will say the save is successful but the spell will still end, tested with both evard's tentacles and haste.
- Anonymous
Word of advice for fighting this boss
Change opportunity attacks to ASK before using melee fighters to bash at him.
Being hit with an opportunity attack can change his focus mid move.

Whoops.. Forgot there was a big damn industrial factory hammer smack dead center of the room. Proceeded to beat it in more "hands on subject" manner. Then again this meant I didnt have to be roundabout how I dealt with him so im satisfied.
- Anonymous
I see people talking about Mephits but I didn't have any. Is it because I encountered them already before the forge or do they spawn the round after you use the hammer? In that case, I would suggest a strategy that I accidentally found, which is only using the hammer to finish him off when at 100 HP or less.
- Anonymous
He reacts to Minor illusion and will investigate it. Try to place it on top of the Mould Chamber when he's opposite it (near the lava wheel). This worked surprisingly well.
- Anonymous
An easy way to defeat this guy at any level: He targets people who do damage, so place your people smartly and lure him with the last person to do damage. Lure him under the hammer and activate it--particularly if you have someone with Misty Step bonus action. Target down the mephits before they are a problem after the hammer attracts them. Rinse. Repeat. If you need to, go back to a save before you start the fight and re-org your spells/abilities/scrolls. Equip things that CAN damage him, and use multi-target spell for the mephits.
- Anonymous
Drop water on him (make him wet via spell or bottle) which gives him vulnerable to cold damage as well while he is superheated.. Summond 4 minor ice elementals via scroll + shooting him with ice arrows + bludgeoning dmg in melee with elxir of strenght + ice spells
took me 3 turns with unlucky dice not even using the forge
- Anonymous
If you pick Elemental Adept for Thunder or Cold. Your Thunder and Cold spells deal normal damage on him when superheated.
- Anonymous
The Mephits are attracted by the hammer- If you kill Grym without the hammer, no mephits will spawn.
- Anonymous
The characters are standing on the stairs and can only lower the empty platform by attacking the lever through the familiar.
After that, you can easily hunt the boss by throwing the weapon of the Bludgeoning attack using the throw.
(Of course, you will need to raise the platform again through Familiar afterwards.)
- Anonymous
The real boss is pathing, and who ever trapped megatron in a ****ing pipe. I’d be pissed off too!
- Anonymous
"Heat Metal" spell also makes the Construct vulnerable to damage. No lava neeeded.
The imps did not spawn for me, maybe cause I did not use the Forge Hammer.
- Anonymous
His HP on tactician is 450, like fighting a ****ing freight train
- Anonymous
Im guessing the mephits spawn only when you didnt clear them in the area before. Theyre on the left after you descended the stairs. I didnt encounter them in the Grym fight.
- Anonymous
the amulet of branding (you can apply a bludgeon dmg debuff to grym before bringing the hammer down) can help you squeeze more damage out of the first smash. i found that the second smash was much harder to set up. it may be that just finishing him off normally after one smash is a good strat.
- Anonymous
I double tapped him with the anvil but then had to reload because you can only use the lava twice so you miss out on a second adamantine equip.
- Anonymous
There's an achievement if you kill grym without using the hammer
Had no idea you could use that to hurt him while fighting. Had to mow down 300hp the old fashioned way.
Goddamn this game keeps surprising me, and this is only in act 1

If you're like me and only have 2 party members that aren't very strong, but at least one with a Bludgeoning weapon, you can ping-pong the boss back and forth as best you can until you get it down to 150 hp. Then smash it with the anvil. You won't spawn adds if it dies from the anvil, otherwise using the anvil spawns several annoying Mephits.
- Anonymous
If you fight him at the gate where he comes from, then there is no mephit reinforcement. I did that on tactician without knowing the anvil exploit and didn't saw a single mephit.
- Anonymous
The lava lever is bugged, I cannot use it while the fight goes on :(
- Anonymous
if you go with mage hand or if you are stealthy, no need to beat the grym
- Anonymous
If you play it smart (or get lucky), you can lure Grym into a spot at the edge of the anvil where both the hammer and the lava will affect him when you activate their respective mechanisms. I was able to kill the big guy in just two rounds by using off-hand and fighter/barbarian bonus attacks on the wheel and the lever.

WOW! What an awesome fight this was. I didn't even know about being able to use the hammer to slam him! LOL! I wish I did cause JESUS. I fought him at level 6 and had to use all my good supplies to take him down, but it was worth it! Man it was ****ing epic to figure out how to make him vulnerable and take him down!
- Anonymous
Fights bugged for me. He doesn't go after prime Threat, he goes to the closest even if it's a fair distance away
- Anonymous
I was a little confused at first when I saw all the lava that instantly killed 2 of party members and noticed all his resists.
Overall a fun, unique fight. I wish I had a backup great mace or something but I guess the anvil gets the job done. The loot is really good as well.
- Anonymous
weak to hammers and maces but you don't want to be at close quarters at low levels
it's a good try for boss fight but in a way relies too much on RNG...
- Anonymous
This is honestly stupid. Why is the protector of the forge weak to the environment he is meant to protect?
Just get him out of the underdark, to ANY place where there is no lava, mass manufacture these things, and you have invulnerable golems you can conquer any city with
- Anonymous
Tip: Kite, heat, hammer, kill adds. Rinse repeat x2. Profit.
Just completed Grym on honor mode using Half- Orc Barbarian Great Weapon Mastery as attacker with Bard buffs, cleric for guidance, The singing sword buff, + oil of speed on him and oil of accuracy. Beat him in 2 turns by using a 2h Maul and spamming the attack command with reckless attack.
If you want a straight forward fight give that a try.
