Idk why, but this sword ignores non magical slashing resistance, f.e. Steel Watcher takes all damage from it.

      • Anonymous

Most reliable way to get this:

        - Make one of your party members a lore bard
        - Take heat metal at level 3 and charisma ASI to at least 18 at level 4.
        - Sit at the gate in stealth, ungroup your party, wait until their is an opening to voss
        - Enter turn based, move your lore bard as close to voss as possible in stealth
        - Heat metal 30% chance to land, can use cutting words as well so it's actually much higher than 30%.

          so here 2 exploits:
          1) after equipping the sword while disguised, you can cancel disguise and keep the buff until you reload or change any eqipment
          2) you can move giths with improvised weapon action near bridge with canceling (right mouse button on pc) and NOT losing action, and then throw them into the river, no loot but you can do that even on lvl1, save on next turn with invis potion or sanctuary, you can throw potions from the cliff before fight and then just step on them, love this game

          • Anonymous

Easiest way to get this in Act 1:

            -Be Lae'zel
-Level 3+ Battlemaster fighter (choose disarming strike as one of your maneuvers)
            -Drink hill giant potion
            -Drink Potion of Invisibility
-Coat melee weapon in Oil of Accuracy
            -Click turn based mode
-Walk up to Voss and use Disarming Attack (Melee)
            -(92% Chance to hit)

Voss has +8 to his strength saving throws, so the strength check that he needs to fail (DC 15) has a 30% chance to drop the weapon. Save scum a bit if you have to, but this will make it take WAY less long than trying to use command (while he's holding the greatsword, he has advantage on wisdom saving throws which is why command is useless and less efficient)

You do not have to take Raphael's deal or kill Voss to get this sword. If you steal the Orphic Hammer from the house of hope and then inform Voss, he will give you the sword.

              • Anonymous

If you don't want to lose Lae'zel, leave her in the camp to do this dirty work. After that when you return to the camp with the prize, you gonna have some weird dialogues with her, but she will be proud that you have slayed her kin, and by holding the silver sword.

Disguise self works for a bit, but then shortly after it’ll stop counting you as a gith. I normally break the disguise as soon as I equip it because…well…I have functional eyes so I can’t look at a gith for more than a few seconds. Haven’t tried keeping the disguise.

                  • Anonymous

You can also use "Command: Drop" in Act 3 to get it from Voss if you didn't get it in Act 1 and didn't accept Raphael's deal

                    • Anonymous

I can confirm that, as of the most recent patch, disguising yourself as a githyanki no longer gives you the bonuses on this sword. You must need a true gith to be able to use the sword properly.

                      • Anonymous

If you want to get this item consistently without needing to respec, grab 2 invis potion/scroll, approach him with 2 members on stealth, enter turn based mode, one of you cast darkness/fog on yourself and Voss, this will prompt a dialogue, so make sure to do this with your most proficient character for stat checks. Save game and try using Fear on Voss, when he drops the weapon you grab it, exit turn mode and go to camp since it won't aggro because they won't see you in the fog. And the sword is yours for the taking. (The spells I meantioned there are lots of ways to get them on act 1 alone and you might honestly have them on your hand)

                        • Anonymous

Best way to get his sword, avoid fight, get xp, and get story progress. Is to go bard level 3 pick up invis and drop a old spell for heat metal. Disguise self as a gith, cast invis go down the bridge until you can barely heat metal on voss, turn based mode and save, heat metal you’ll drop invis and be out of range of the soldiers agro since he is immortal and wont fight rn, do the dialogue to avoid a fight using gith disguise, cancel heat metal if he dropped it if not reload and redo. Then immediately return to camp and long rest sword will still be there gith soldiers will be gone, grab sword and leave.

Sword can be used with full buffs on ANY RACE while looking like yourself, disguise self gith, equip sword, break disguise it will even persist through long rests only downside is you cant unequip it without dropping the buff. To fix this simply disguise gith and reequip. Further research has shown you lose the buff upon leveling up or respecing at withers also you cannot even click it in inventory or you lose the buff, further testing is underway but an easy way to fix losing the buff as ANY CLASS is using the helmet from the deluxe upgrade/edition to disguise self and then just unequip and reequip the blade.

If anyone was wondering, you can get another sword even if you cheesed in act 1. But not legitly. If you talk to him after completing what's necessary, the dialogue says he gives you it but you get nothing.

Instead, you have to not interact with him.
Turn invisible/greater invisible, go turn based mode, use command or heat metal for him to drop, pick up sword.

He will auto aggro you if your stealth is broken. You can fight and kill him, or just run away from combat by distancing yourself. Suggest you don't kill him because he appears at end scene of game.

It's possible to do this in complete stealth and have him not notice. But if you approach him later you talk, he auto knows you are enemy for some magical reason. Don't go close to him again.

This will leave the quest still open though. Though honestly it doesn't matter since you collect the flags end game sequence.

I got it this way in Act 1 without immediately triggering a fight, so I could regroup and start a coordinated attack:
                              - Position a character that is able to cast "Command: Drop" on the road behind the dragon (sneak/invis there).
                              - Wait till all Gyth are as far away from Voss as possible.
                              - Save.
                              - Now cast "Command: Drop" on Voss, and see what happens. If you found the right spot/distance, dialogue should start (use dialogue options that lead to a fight), he will fly away, the other gith will get hostile, but won't attack since you are too far away.
If they attack, or dialogue doesn't start after the cast, load and try again until you find the right spot.
                              - When in the right spot, save/load until he drops the sword.
                              - Now use summons to lure the hostile gith away from the sword. Make sure your party is very far away, so they won't get involved in the fight.
                              - Sneak next to sword, if necessary use throw to get it out of their sight, and pick it up.

This way, you can come back later to fight the gith for xp and loot. In my playthrough, they were far apart from each other after I had lured them away, which made the fight considerably easier.

How good would this be if you had a Gith Wildheart Bard with Bear Heart (or another race using disguise self to be gith)? Great damage, and makes it sow you have resistance vs ALL types of damage (Bear Heart has resistance on everything but psychic damage). Or should I just go Balduran?

Anyone know the best way to get it without triggering the fight? I did metal spell drops pass all dialogue but right still breaks up.

Just let it happen/ kill them and pick up the weapon later?

It’s dumb that its abilities are locked to gith, people steal these swords in lore because of how awesome they are, no one would steal them if they didn’t work.

playing rn and apparently the quest is bugged or smth. I tell Voss that I got the hammer and he says something like yeah good job and heres the sword, my quest journal gets updated but I get no sword. I tried to do with Laezel and without her and yet hes not giving the sword idk why. I killed him and he had it so idk whats wrong

Alright guys, I think I figured out best way.
First bring your party to the mountain pass to trigger scene. Dragon flying above scene. At this point I believe if Lazel is in your party, the rider should have a sword.
Next, send lazel back to your camp. Replace with halfling bard with both invisibility and heat metal.
Then, transform the halfling bard into a Gith using transformation or mask (this will help you get out of conversation).
Go solo with halfling and trun invisible, walk up to the guy with sword. Save here.
Save scum and heat metal until the guy flies away. You are given option to deceive the guy if you are Gith. The battle should be avoided, and you should get exp.

Not sure what a couple of the other commenters are doing to have him holding a crossbow and not this sword in Act 1.

He was holding the sword (31/08/23), and I landed Command: drop on my first attempt. The Gith didn't take kindly to that. Lae'zel got upset and turned on me, and the other Gith promptly clapped me straight down to Avernus.
Eventually ended up having to send her away, then stage a smash & grab. Because if the other Gith are also forced to drop their weapons, they will make a beeline for the Sword Of The Astral Planes.
The AI also aggressively targeted the character that I sent in to snatch the sword up, with Hold Person.

                                          • 8/30, v4.1.13669438. I was able to get the SSotAP today. At level 3 I used "Heat Metal" with the Bard hireling to get Voss to drop it. I had no luck with "Command (Drop)" and "Disarming Attack (Melee)" at this level but that could just be due to RNG. My main is Githyanki and I was on explorer difficulty.

                                            • Definitely patched as of 08/28/2023. Kith'rak Voss takes 0 dmg, no matter that dmg type, no matter the rolls. He will either ride his dragon out, or teleport away on his own. No matter the rolls, no disarm, no drop, no nada.

                                              • Anonymous

I made it to the Mountain Pass (my party is Lvl 5) but Kith'rak Voss is wielding a Crossbow and not the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane (SSotAP). I've checked each of the patrol members and the only ones wielding melee weapons are Sarth Baretha (Gith'yanki Greatsword) and Gish For'reth (Gith'yanki Longsword). None of which is this legendary weapon.

When I use Command (drop weapon) or Disarming strike successfully Voss only drops the crossbow before flying away. Is there something I'm missing? Is there a way to make sure Voss has the SSotAP equipped?

                                                • Anonymous

Not patched as of August 28th. He should have the sword on his back (outside of dialogue) when it'll work properly. If you have lae'zel, send her to camp. You can use command drop on a character (triggers combat afterwards, not recommended, and it was 12% for my level 4), or have a character heat metal it off of him (triggers dialogue almost immediately, 30% chance on my level 4) . If the character is Gith, or disguised as Gith (DLC helm) you can glide your way out of that conversation without fighting anyone.

Note: it does cause some sequence break dialogue with lae'zel as she mentions locations in act 3, but I'm not sure of the long-term repercussions yet.

if you are trying to steal this sword in act 1, here is the best method:
                                                    this works from level 3.
hire the fighter hireling (if you are level 4 take the feat for +2 in any stat and take strength)
bring your party up to the gate before the patrol, ungroup the fighter and have shadowheart cast guidance, and gale or wyll cast invisibility on the hireling.
go to camp with your 3 man party so they are not part of the fight, swap to hireling and run in behind voss, and activate turn based mode (quick save here after TBM for fast save scum)
use disarming strike from behind him, it has a 75% chance to hit with these stats but there is also the check for the disarm. look for 'weapon dropped' before the cutscene starts (it will be orange) if it doesn't drop you can immediately reload.
in the cutscene select the fighter dialogue option and then say nothing, this is the fastest way to combat with no checks.
when combat starts you can immediately pick up the sword and transfer it to another character in your party inventory.
hireling will die but you can just revive her and then pickpocket withers.

also regarding the racial bonuses: anyone who can cast shapeshift can access these additional buffs, just make sure you are githyanki when you equip the sword, then you can remove the shapeshift and keep the buff. great if you got the helmet from the deluxe edition as you can quickly make this full effectiveness for anyone.

You don't need to agree to Raphael's deal for Voss to give you this sword. If you can roll 30+ to decieve Voss into thinking you accepted the deal, he will also give you the sword.

Ran into an issue where voss will be equipped with a crossbow instead of the sword in act one, unsure if that method is patched?
