      Some thoughts:
1 - If you kill the Drider by helping the harpers in the ambush, they will loot the moonlantern.
2 - If you let (1) happen, you can still get it from Isobel in the Inn
3 - You need to equip the lantern AS A WEAPON, NOT AS A TORCH so you can gain the "Inspect Lantern" skill and talk to the pixie

Going to share a discovery I made, so here's how you can get the buff to get protected after you turn on the spider and help the harpers, I'll write it out in steps:

            1. Have the spider guide you through the lands.
            2. Side with the harpers.
            3. Tricky one, so let's make this step that you save before you land the final blow.
( Note 1: Make sure Branthos is not standing next to the spider boss Karniss, or he'll loot the lantern himself. Push him away if you have to.
Note 2: I've done this with a controller, so not sure how it'd work with keyboard/mouse)
            4. Once you fell the beast, enter turn-based mode. Chances are, Branthos will still talk to whoever was closest to the lantern holder, but you can switch characters here, take the moon lantern and set the pixie free.
            5. Once you set the pixie free and get the buff, return the now empty lantern to whoever branthos is talking to, and hand over the moon lantern. He'll still receive a lit moon lantern, while you have the buff much earlier on.

This was done in three days after hotfix 6 was applied and I've done this today. Went to camp, nobody suspected a thing.

Fun fact! You can kill Dolly Dolly Dolly as the Dark Urge, giving you her item's buff until your next long rest.

I decided to long rest, as it didn't state that and soft-locked myself, unable to get to moonrise.

Inspecting it gives you the option to release the fairy inside. Releasing it will give you a bell that can be used to get a buff that protects you from the darkness.

I'm pretty sure there's a way to softlock yourself out of getting the lantern if you summon the drider, turn on him when the ambush happens and then attack the Harpers at the Last Light. After we killed the drider, one of the Harpers took the lantern without us having an opportunity to claim it, however, he didn't have it on him when we killed him.

This item is in possession of Nar'tiss a Drider you will meet if you go to the Cursed Shadow Lands and use a Musical Instrument found on Minthara called "Spider Lyre". You can just pickpocket Minthara, loot it off of her or have it given to you if you help the Goblins. Once you use this in the Cursed Shadow Lands the Drider will show up holding the Lantern and a Magic Longsword. Either kill him, Intimidate him as a Palidan(I heard rumors of this) or just use Command(Drop) to have him drop both the Sword and Lantern. Im also assuming you can access different dialogue with him if your a "Lolth" Drow Elf or a "Lolth" Cleric considering Lolth is the spider god
