As of posting it seems to be bugged. Had it on offhand on shadowheart and once you kill the first enemy, the charges never go down, it's infinite lvl 6 spells. Summon ghouls and mummies and spamming harm currently

Is the stack essense a bug or feature ?
seems not legit when we can spam spell lv6 for free but the describe does not said it cannot stack.

        • Anonymous

This staff is so bugged. Life essence passive stacks, so as long as you kill something pretty regularly you can cast necromancy spells for free. Infinitely. Btw you can build stacks of life essence from destroying objects.

          • Anonymous

If you're a warlock and have the (very logical) idea to spam Circle of Death with this, do not bother; due to how Mystic Arcanum works(doesn't take up a slot but can only be cast once per long rest) it will still be blocked even if you have charges from this item. This means this staff is only useful for casting Blight(your EB is probably better) and Bestow Curse(which is awful in this game).

It's a bit of a shame, but at least it frees you to use one of the many other incredibly OP staffs Act 3 has, even if it's not as flashy and flavourful.

            • Anonymous

you can also: generate stacks, then unequip the staff (even equip it on a diff character if you want to), then active the passive buff (so the circle icon is glowing), then long rest, and you will still maintain the buff casting necromancy spells freely forever (or until your now hidden stack counter goes to 0, not sure needs to be tested)

              • Anonymous

you can generate stacks on one character, then pass the staff to another character, and the first character will still have the stacks

                • Anonymous

This staff appears to be bugged. The turns remaining on the buff it gives you never actually decreases so once you kill a single enemy the buff lasts forever

                  • Anonymous

Staff is completely busted. Pretty much unlimited casts of Animate/Create Undead, 6th level Blight, or Circle of Death. Not to mention enemies have disadvantage vs Blight or Circle of Death.

                    • Anonymous

looks like a staff with a torch end with a ball of burning green fire at the top dont have an image though

                      • Anonymous

Having your party knock out enemies then finishing them off with magic missile is a good way of getting life essence.
                        Cantrips also give essence.
