Can someone please make note that this weapon is inaccessible if you missed the Auntie Ethel Questline?
      Caaause it is.

Works with sneak attack as its finesse but you get this so late in the game really.

Its like the first real one hander in the entire game that you want to use with nothing in the other hand that you'd have to build entirely around. Just seems like you should get this in act 2 so you could have had some fun with it, plus the dark areas of act 2 would suit it better considering where you get it from.

It would be awesome in act 2. Not as useful at level 12 halfway+ through act 3 as its very easy to never need this

I have him in a bard build from the College of Swords, and the damage he can cause with the right build is quite impressive.

          • Anonymous

Best rapier in the game. Crit range, second attack, 2 reactions. Worth for warlock and another duelist's builds.

            • I'm trying this with out with Sentinel on a Thief Martial hybrid to get Extra Attack with a method to prevent Blindness. Never use your reactions for Withering Cut as there are better uses below.

The general gist is using Cloak of Cunning Brume to cause Blindness in them but not yourself giving you Advantage and maximizing your chances to use your reactions for full attacks. Since sneak attack triggers once per turn, you want to spread out your reaction attacks to multiple enemies if possible.

So walk up to an enemy (or a few of them), and Disengage to create a fog cloud, enemies will usually run out of it if possible triggering a Opportunity attack that can Sneak Attack (since it's a new turn it can trigger again), and Sentinel will root them so they will probably attack you (with disadvantage). If you mutli-ed into Battle Master or have Vest of Soul Rejuvination you can Riposte (or if they swing instead of running).

The general idea is you want to do at least 1 regular attack in Fog per turn of yours, and one Reaction attack per turn of an enemy. So get in the thick of things to encourage multiple enemies to either run from your fog or attack you so you can Riposte. For a build that can do all this you're looking at somewhere between 2d6 and 4d6 depending on your mutli-class split.

I am going 8/4 Monk/Thief for the Shadow teleport, Wisdom to AC, and excellent use of extra Bonus Actions. Anyway I am not sure if this all mechanically will work out the way I am planning and probably wont be able to test out for until the end of next week. But seems pretty cool.

              • Anonymous

Does anyone know if the additional reaction is currently bugged? I specifically wanted to test this out to see if this weapon's bonus reaction could be used to give a Light Domain Cleric two uses of Warding Flare per turn. Sadly, that doesn't seem to be the case. I've since tried testing the extra reaction with different skills/abilities and I've found that nothing seems to work. The game just doesn't seem to register that I'm supposed to have TWO reactions per turn.

The wording on the item description could suggest that the extra reaction is only available if/when you get a critical hit, but that doesn't seem right.

It’s still incredible with a shield. All you lose is one reaction and 1 point lower crits, and it does as much damage one handed as the Halberd of Vigilance with +1 more to Attack Rolls. You can still use Dueler’s Enthusiasm with a shield as well (since you’re not dual-wielding)!

                  • Anonymous

Bothers me that the best single hand weapon in the game doesn't want you to use a shield.

It's a great weapon but there are so few really good single hand options to use with shields.

                    • Anonymous

Having an extra reaction is insane on pretty much every class, I personally consider this BiS in any Dexterity build

                      • Anonymous

So far it seems this weapon benefits Pact of the Blade multiclass combos and Fighters the most. At Warlock 5 you get your extra pact attack, and since it stacks with other extra attacks, you can easily pull off three regular attacks with you action (make sure to have hex up on the target) and a fourth attack with your extra action if hex is already up. This way, hex will go off with your 4 melee attacks and both of your Withering Cuts activations. My current build is lvl6 Archfey Warlock + lvl 6 Swords Bard for the sweet +4 to AC Defensive Flourish and I'm tearing through the endgame.

                        • Anonymous

So I did a build using this and pallock.
Oathbreaker aura, armor of bhaal, duellist feat, duellist gloves, arcane synergy.
You poke for 90 dmg and can then add divine smite on top. You also have two reactions. It's quite crazy.

                          • Anonymous

There are assuredly more synergistic builds/combos but I thought I had my Lore Bard theme'd as a Red Mage all figured out til this came along. An extra reaction? And a full on attack with a bonus action? That's two Cutting Words per turn doubling battlefield control. Then slap on the Pyroquickness hat, Helldusk armor (blocking burning and making you proficient with the armor you're wearing) and gloves (granting some extra damage to weapon attacks + spell save DC/attack rolls), toss out a fireball, and then get two stabs in via the second bonus action. Suddenly you're a high AC controller able to wade into the middle of the fight and deal legit damage any which way. True Red Mage hours.

                            • Anonymous

You do not gain the extra reaction nor the extra attack while wielding a shield, so i assume you dont get the crit either. Even if it does, i assume it doesnt stack with other sources of crit. I think it makes sense; the sword would be simply the best weapon in the game for a shield build if it worked this way.

                              • Anonymous

The necrotic damage from withering cut counts as a separate source of damage to proc things like hex or hunters mark. Pact of the blade warlocks can get get 9d6 extra damage a turn with the weapon attack + withering cut + lifedrinker.

                                • Anonymous

Does the "Moreover, you gain an additional reaction per turn" work while dual wielding? Or its also canceled just like the 19 crit hit?

                                  • Anonymous

Does this weapon's crit range effect stack with other sources? The wording makes it seem like it doesn't but I know other sources like Champion Fighter or the Spell Sniper feat do stack.

                                    • Anonymous

This weapon kinda makes dual wielding as a rogue not worthwhile anymore which is a tad annoying. I mean my off-hand attack was about as strong as a normal attack using the dual wielding feat, the fighting style and using dual rapiers, but why would I bother putting points in those when I can just get another extra attack and swap dual wielding for something like savage attacker.

                                      • Anonymous

Just done some checking with this weapon. In indeed adds to your critical chance even while wearing shield in offhand.
The wording "While your offhand is empty" is kinda missleading and should be edited into "while not holding weapon in your offhand".

Upon completion of the quest, I didn't receive Duelist's Prerogative or the Amulet.
I started the quest by confronting Captain Grizly, going below the tavern, knocking out the Masks, then leaving. I went and saved Mayrina, learned about the potion, used it, saved the girl and killed Ethel.
Went to claim my reward from Lora, and all I got was a thank-you. No loot.
Perhaps starting the quest with Lora at Basilisk Gate Barracks is a must for rewards, to guarantee loot I would start the quest there.

Does anyone know if the increased crit range applies to unarmed attacks if you use this on a monk? I want to aim for this as my endgame weapon on a Monk/Rogue multiclass.

Really funny on Jaheira with the sporekeeper armor and horns of the berserker, had a funny 4 spore druid/ 5 Champion/ 3 Thief with 20 wisdom, with the buffs active and access to bonus action haste and crits on 18+ you can blender people up close, plus you have 3-4 separate instances of necrotic damage to benefit from the damage buff on the armor, you can use risky ring for reliable sneak attacks and the acid ring for the shear attack quantity.

You can also full action fungal form and haste spore + bonus attack to triple attack with the spore damage buff active meaning the low temp health is not as bad as it seems, just start in fungal form or haste it after reaching melee range.

For some reason wearing a shield counts as dual wielding when it comes to this weapon's special ''Dueller's Enthusiasm''.

Makes little sense to me considering fighting style ''Duelling'' works with shields.
''When you are wielding a melee weapon that is not Two-Handed or Versatile in one hand, and no weapon in the other, you deal an additional 2 damage with that weapon.''

So NO WEAPON in the other should mean a shield is not a weapon and since we can't dual wield shields let alone kill anything with em, one would assume it should work.. right? (Or duelling is bugged, one of em is anyway)

This weapon made my fighter feel insanely broken. At level 12 I was doing at least 4 attacks per turn, 3 more with action surge, and 3 more with a haste spell. Dump in the extra damage from a battle master's maneuvers and you can just decimate things in a single round. Couple that with a 26 armor class and most fights just become laughable
