Does it really take an action? Wouldnt it just be a passive thing when you strike with your weapon, otherwise how are you going to use you action to activate this and use an action to attack?

Best with thief for two bonus attacks or monk flurry cause they fly away

This is not limited to once per turn as written in the description.

A few clarifications:
1. Despite it saying it's on a melee attack (both here and in-game), you can use this with ranged; clicking on it gives you two options for melee or ranged just like some smites or battlemaster attacks, and the reaction will proc if you attack with a bow same as with anything else if you are not selecting it manually.
2. It is a reaction, so only once per turn and you can't do something like guarantee max damage on a lightning spell with your channel divinity reaction, then get an extra 1d8 on an offhand attack from this with your bonus action afterwards if you are dual wielding. Same deal for an extra action, such as from haste.
3. It does reroll damage for savage attacker, so that's nice.
4. It does not work with throw, unarmed, or cantrips.
5. It doesn't have it's own attack roll, but if your regular attack crits it rolls 2d8 instead of 1d8 (there's a second crit reaction same as smites), so crit chance items do indirectly work with it.
