How to unlock Savage Attacker IN BG3

  • You'll need to fulfill the following requirements to unlock Savage Attacker:

BG3 Savage Attacker Tips & Notes

  • One case it actually does work is when using the Divine Smite melee attack of the Paladin class or using any of their Smite spells. It will actually re-roll all of the damage dice that you do in this case, giving you the highest number of the two numbers you roll for each dice.
  • It is a great Feat for Paladins, since it works in conjunction with Divine Smite melee attacks or any of their Smite spells giving them double rolls for every dice.
  • Does not reroll the Rogue's Sneak Attack dice however.
  • Savage Attacker does not work on unarmed attacks but works with Divine Smite, and Improved Divine Smite.
  • Instead of comparing the totals for the rolls, it compares each individual die with its reroll. For example, when you attack with a greatsword dealing 2d6 damage, if the first d6 is a 1 and it's reroll is a 5, and the second d6 is a 5 and it's reroll is a 1, the total would be 10, even though the total results of both the original 2d6 and the savage attacker rerolls are 6.
  • As an example, a Paladin dealing crit damage with a longsword and using a Level 2 Smite (total of 8d8) would go from dealing 36 + STR to 46.4 + STR - This is excellent to get if you're using Smite a lot, and want to deal more damage.

Confirmed working on throws as of Patch #5 + Hotfix #17, contrary to the similar named Half-Orc-feat "Savage Attacks" which only works when striking in melee but not when throwing.

Does this work on Myrmidon's Shape Change attacks? After all, Tavern Brawler no longer adds accuracy to their attack roles, which means the game no longer seems to recognize Fire, Water, and Air as unarmed attacks, which means they must now be registered as weapon attacks.

Patch 3 bugged it. Now it rerolls and takes. The second dice, no matter if it's higher or lower. My 8 got rerolled to a 3.

If I have Savage Attacker and use the Brace ability, do I just basically roll the damage dice three times and take the highest?

Also, does it work with Battlemaster superiority dice?

for those unsure, ALL damage dice are re-rolled, e.g. Shar's Spear of Evening(1d8 piercing + 1d6 (conditional) piercing + 1d4 Necrotic) with MorningLord's Radiance (+1d4 radiant). with savage attacker feat, on critical hit:
              2d8 piercing, re-roll
              2d6 piercing, re-roll
              2d4 necrotic, re-roll
              2d4 radiant, re-roll.
total 2x4 = 8 re-rolls. very useful for weapons with lots of elemental add-ons.

I can confirm after testing on reddit with u/RadiantPlum9987 that this rerolls all dice added to a melee weapon attack individually, taking the highest of all separate die rolls. It does not work on the dice totals or sections of dice. In other words, if you attack with the Everburning Blade and apply a 1st level Smite, this feat will roll 2d6, 2d6, 2d4, 2d8, 2d8, and take the highest die in each of those, adding them to get your total damage. This feat is excellent for paladins, and probably rogues as well.

How does this work with GWF style? Does it roll 2 damage die and if either of them are a 1/2 they get rerolledand then the highest is selected?

This actually only applies to melee attacks. Ranged damage is not affected by this at all. ← What a pity...

So if i have Advantage on my Attack Roll....and with Savage Attacker, i roll the dice 3 times and take the highest number?

                      • Anonymous

I'm bad at the math side of things, so I have a quick question about the math on weapons that deal 2dX damage. If you're wielding a greatsword, does the game roll 2d6 twice and take the better result, or does it roll 1d6 four times, taking the better result on each d6? Are those two situations statistically equivalent and therefore it doesn't matter? The heart of my question is that I'm trying to figure out if this feat is just plain better if you're wielding weapons with multiple damage dice, or am I just overanalyzing?

I ran some numbers out of curiosity, if it works as advertised, it should result in a ~16.5% increase in the total from the dice (before adding a modifier). More specifically, a d8 goes from an average of 4.5 to 5.8, d10 goes from 5.5 to 7.15 and d12 goes from 6.5 to 8.5.

As an example, a paladin critting with a longsword and using a second level smite (total of 8d8) would go from dealing 36 + STR to 46.4 + STR - this is assuming the feat works for smites of course, which I haven't tested yet. If it does, this seems like an okay pick up if you're smiting a lot and want more damage, otherwise probably not that worth compared to something like great weapon master.

                          • I've tested this for ranged attacks (Longbow and Dual X Bow) with Astarion with Advantage and still rolled a 1 on some of my tested Damaged Dice. Doesn't seem to be working with ranged weapon attacks. Looks like it might only be working for melee. Will update after more testing.

This ability is broken for the moment. I tested 35 attacks w/wo this ability at level 4 (with archery or dagger) to see the actual damage increase. The results are appaling : the mean evolution of the damage was +0%. Can't see why. I think it might be still bugged.
