Polearm Master

When attacking with a glaive, halberd, quarterstaff, or spear, you can use a bonus action to attack with the butt of your weapon.

You can also make an Opportunity Attack when a target comes within range.

Polearm Master is a Feat in Baldur's Gate 3. Feats are special talents or expertise that provide special capabilities to characters. At certain levels, your character will get to choose between an Ability Score Improvement Feature or a Feat.

Polearm Master Tips & Notes

  • Currently does not apply any damage bonuses (like Great Weapon Master) other than Strength on your bonus action attack.
  • This feat is ideal to pair with Sentinel, and is a good way to be able to tank in Baldur's Gate 3, as is in DnD 5e.
  • For Circle of Spores, the feat does not work together with Shillelagh. Both reactions will not roll their damage on WIS, but rather will do so on DEX/STR stats. Additionally, Symbiotic Entity's bonus necrotic damage do not apply as well.
  • The Bonus Action attack can also scale off of Dexterity if it's higher. This is mostly relevant for Monks who are able to wield Quartersstaffs and Spears with DEX, including Pact of the Blade Warlocks who can't use CHA on the Bonus Action attack.
  • The Bonus Attack deals minimal damage and the better benefit from this feat is the Opportunity Attack when combined with the Sentinel. When someone enters your attack range, you will get an Opportunity Attack while a reach weapon is equipped, and the Sentinel feat will be able to stop their movement before they get into their melee range of you (unless they also have a reach weapon).
  • You can only do Polearm Clout (the Bonus Action attack) once per turn, even if you have two Bonus Actions from being a Thief. Polearm Clout will appear on your hotbar after attacking on your turn, and will disappear as soon as you use it. Attacking a second time with Extra Attack will not bring the Polearm Clout action back to your hotbar.

polearm master clout gets the minus 5 to hit from great weapon master's "All In" but does not get any of the extra damage. no effects which claim to buff all weapon attacks buff the damage of the clout as they are intended to.

A much better version of this feat would have been if it allowed your character to be versatile with all polearm-type weapons so you can wield them with a shield.

        • As of Patch 4, you can only do Polearm Clout (the bonus action attack) once per turn, even if you have two Bonus Actions from being a Thief. Polearm Clout will appear on your hotbar after attacking on your turn, and will disappear as soon as you use it. Attacking a second time with Extra Attack will not bring the Polearm Clout action back to your hotbar.

The bonus action attack also allows for smiting. So if you're using the smite machine build and don't want to dual wield it works VERY well. Just turn on the reaction for div smite and laugh

Bonus action won't even show up anywhere. Hotbars, character sheet, the little extra menu that pops up on the right, it's just nowhere to be seen.

Anyone know if I'm missing something or if it's bugged?

              • While i don't know is it a bug or not, i would find it strange that the buffs related/applied to the deadly side of the weapon would also apply to the "butt of the weapon".
Also from a balance perspective this would basically give you an option to benefit from these weapons as if they got the dual wield "bonus action attack" but none of the downsides since you would use them as a 2handed (glaive/halberd).
And that is on top of the super synergy with the Sentinel (feat) and the other part of this feat, Opportunity Attack on anyone that comes within long reach.
Kinda crazy for a single feat to provide so much.

                  Heads up for Spore Druids:

Unfortunately, this feat does not work alongside Shillelagh - both reactions won't roll their damage on Wisdom but rather Dex/Str ratings. To add to that, Symbiotic Entity's bonus necrotic damage won't apply as well.

Ran into a nasty bug regarding the Extra Opportunity attack on this one...

When I approach an enemy that is wielding polearm I get the popup asking me if I want to use my Opportunity attack (despite this not being the situation that should trigger it). When I choose yes, the enemy gets the opportunity attack on me (no idea if they actually have Polearm Master or not).

As a QA myself, it is baffling that something like this made it through a sanity test - it certainly feels insane

Should note that the bonus action attack can also scale off of Dexterity if it's higher, which is relevant for Monks who can use Quarterstaffs and Spears with Dex. Also Pact of the Blade Warlocks who cannot use Charisma on the bonus action attack.

The bonus attack is minor. It's just a nice-to-have to use when you don't have other bonus actions. The real power is the opportunity attack added if you combine it with the sentinel feat for some "holy mother of God" goodness:

When using a reach weapon if someone enters your attack range (10 feet) you get an attack of opportunity. If you hit them then sentinel stops their movements. This means if they are not using a reach weapon they won't be able to move into range to attack you.

                        Kaladin Storm-blessed builds rise up.

The feat is working fine in that it gives you the bonus action attack, you just have to attack normally first.

However, the bonus action attack is definitely bugged. It doesn't benefit from any added damage (acid damage from a ring, rage, etc) and worse, if you have great weapon master, it WILL get the -5 to hit, but you won't get the +10 to damage.

You can really tell that this wasn't available during early access, it clearly wasn't tested thoroughly.

thinking of comboing this with Wyll and his 'pushback' Eldritch Blast. essentially keep pushing enemies out of reach for them to enter my range again and get another free opportunity hit.

The best outcome is if the Char is in the same turn order as Wyll, make your Char hit first, then have Wyll push them out of range. They try to come in again....profit.

Also thinking of using Sentinel Feat with this.

Does the Opportunity Attack part only happen if you're wielding a polearm, or is it any weapon?
(I am aware that the 1st part wouldn't)
