Can you cast the spell multiple times per LR when using your own Spell Slots or is it JUST once?

Does this add +1 Sorcerer Spell Slot to use for any known Spell if you're a Sorcerer, or is that Spell Slot locked to the 1 Spell selected?
I took this feat as a fighter and choose the shield spell. It's enabled in my spellbook but it just won't ever proc. I've checked the attack rolls and multiple times shield should have beaten the dc but it still wouldn't ask me if I wanted to use it. Seems to be broken atm for non-caster classes. Cantrips work though.
