Background |
Deception Sleight of Hand |
Charlatan is a Background in Baldur's Gate 3. Backgrounds are special traits or expertises that affect the starting Proficiencies the player has and also add two bonus background features. Backgrounds may also decide how your character be treated by certain NPCs, and how can they handle certain situations.
Charlatan Information
- You're an expert in manipulation, prone to exaggeration and more than happy to profit from it.
- Astarion has this background.
Charlatan Skill Proficiencies
- Deception Proficiency: Add your proficiency bonus to any roll made with Deception.
- Sleight of Hand Proficiency: Add your proficiency bonus to any roll made with Sleight of Hand.
Charlatan Background Goals
- When a character performs an action that's true to their Background, they will be Inspired. Earning +1 Inspiration Point and +25 Exp. Inspiration may be spent to reroll an Ability Check. Not only your character can become Inspired, but also your Companions.
- You may hold up to 4 Inspiration points at once. Inspiration earned over the cap will become Experience Points.

AnonymousI'm currently playing Astarion's Origins playthrough, and getting the 'Cheese Your Way Through' background goal was fun. The Intimidation option had an Advantage dice roll personalised to him, "Bare Your Fangs"

"Morally Gray" (Betray the trust of either Moonrise or Lastlight) : unknown how to get or if bugged or removed

I couldn’t get Merciless to work, myself. Dialogue defaulted to my PC when the pack was dead, and Astarion did approve of getting Flind to kill herself, but no inspiration.
I find it unlikely it would have worked if Astarion was the one to do it, as all other inspirations affect party members (in my experience).

SPOILER AHEAD
If you let Astarion finish the ritual in Baldur's Gate and surrender him to the group wanting him at the exit, you will gain the Charlatan inspiration.
The Charlatan Astarion dies afterwards, of course.

Act 1 "Warmonger" - Cause Glut to stage a coup and pick a side. (I sided with Glut)

Cheese Your Way Through requires you to convince Gimblebock and his group to leave through dialogue before using the door.
For maximum XP, threaten or persuade them to leave (XP), promptly enter turn based mode and murder them. You will not break Vengeance Oath, and there is no companion disapproval at least for Lae'zel, Astarion and Shadowheart. You can use either Deception or Performance on the door check.

There are so many instances where you should be getting Inspiration but you don't get it. How is deceiving the Ogres in the goblin village an Urchin goal but not a Charlatan one???

Mirror Master: So long as Astarion or a Charlatan is in your party and you INTERACT with the Mirror in the Alchemists Cellar whether to Intimidate it, or correctly answering its questions will net you the Mirror Master Inspiration. Either or will do. Attacking the mirror and breaking it, will NOT get you Mirror Master Inspiration. Additionally, answering the questions awards you additional experience, as opposed to Intimidating the Mirror. So it's while, not well worth your while to answer the questions, it is mildly worth it.
CHEESE YOUR WAY THROUGH is either bugged or isn't in the game any more!

Act 1: A Friend To All - Gain access to the Grymforge peacefully by lying to the raft patrol.

I managed to achieve One of Us. However there were no bonus xp from it! And I only knew the Inspiration had been achieved while reading the Combat feed. The prompt didn't appear. In trying it again, showed just how difficult it is to achieve this because you need to constantly succeed Saving Throws until you reach past the waterfall.
