Do spells like this and hold person require a spell roll or just the target to make a saving throw?

Had an enemy use this on me in the underdark and was stuck in it even though i made a saving throw. The hook horrors proceeded to hit me multiple times for 3 rounds with no saving throw and it said 9 turns left the whole time.

This is a great control spell to lock down an annoying trash mob or even target a boss with low wisdom, since Legendary Resistances weren't implemented in the game.
It's also very useful to knock enemies prone from a distance and send over ghouls or flying ghouls to feed on them and restore their own HP, which is great for making your ghouls last through multiple combat encounters.

This can also CC constructs and undead currently, those you cant Sleep or Hold

In case you are thinking that enemies only get to shake the effect when they are damaged, that not accurate as of August. They make a saving throw every turn. And if they damaged, they make ANOTHER. So don't expect to be able to milk 10 turns out of this

It doesn't seem to grant critical hits in melee anymore, only advantage ?

Can also be acquired by making a pact with the Old One as a warlock

Any class can also learn it from the mad monk in act III, at the cost of some wisdom. If you make 2 (15) WIS saves though, you wont take a WIS stat loss

In D&D you can cast it to enemies with immunity to charm condition because it doesn't apply any charm condition only tests wisdom saving throw. Does it works in same way in BG3?

probably one of the best lv1 spells, On top of that, if you play Sorcerer Copper Dragonic, you could cc 2 of targets in one turn with meta magic only 1. Though every time you hit, the enemy has chance to resist spell but you still can focus on other targets first.
