Speak with Dead Tips & Notes
- Speak with Dead is a ritual spell which can be cast without expending a spell slot outside combat.
- Corpses you kill may refrain from speaking with the caster. Circumvent this using the Disguise Self (also a ritual spell) first.
- Certain attacks' or spells' killing blow effect may cause the body to be "damaged", rendering a recently killed corpse unusable for "Speak with Dead". Be mindful of how you finish your targets if you want to keep them intact for the spell to work.

Never spend a spell slot on this spell, since you can get it both via book of thay and the withers tomb necklace.
You can even cast the spell once via necklace and then replace the necklace with something better until long rest.

What is a bit stupid, you will use the spell slot (or charge) everytime, even if the corpse does not or cannot respond. It should use a charge only if you actually question someone, otherwise it is a bit stupid... so it's basically a lot of quick save and load using this spell. A bit annoying.

Speak with Dead can be cast by using the following Items:
Gomwick, owner of the dog Scratch.
The Amulet of Lost Voices
How do I use Gomwick to cast this then? do I need to use a dagger to cut him up so he fits in my backpack or what?

Why can't we talk to the corpses right after killing them, having to swap characters out every time just to do so doesn't really add anything to the game
We already forcing them back into the land of the living, might as well make them talk too regardless if you're the killer or not

So two things
1: I'm pretty sure you can get this spell as an Arcane Trickster (Lv. 3).
2: Use this in conjunction with "Speak With Dead" spell after you've killed your target to question them so they cannot identify you as their killer. (I'm unsure if this works in-game, about to go test it out, but I thought of this playing my Warlock.)
I hear this is useful in the Hunt the Devil quest where you Kill Anders and/or Karlach.

Can talk to the dead archer at the grove gates, dosent do much, reveals his sisters name, former professions and where his belongings are hid, but you can already highlight the bag with 'ALT' key

You can cast this on Gomwick, the dead body near the dog below blighted village. He tells you about letters he had to deliver

It seems like killing blows that deal Radiant, Fire, Necrotic, or Acid damage will make a corpse un-Speakable.
Anyone know if any other damage types cause that?
