Speak with Animals Tips & Notes
- Speak with Animals is a ritual spell that can be cast without expending spell slots outside of combat.
- Warlocks who choose Beast Speech as one of their Eldritch Invocations can cast Speak with Animals at will, without expending a spell slot. (This is a weird note, since Speak with Animals is a ritual spell and can be cast without a spell slot outside of combat for anyone in the game.)
- When speaking to animals, remember that just because they can communicate does not mean they are smart. Typically you want to still treat them like an animal and appeal to their natural instincts.

Does anybody understand the phrase people say to cast this? It loops in my head like Ignis! but I can't write it out :'(

If you need an achievement and 'Speak with Animals' is blocking it, simply kill your character and revive

Volo sells a couple speak with animal potions when you first arrive at the druid grove. He's talking to a bear in the area where the druids are doing their ritual. He hasn't failed me yet.

Excellent spell for a bard. Less than optimal for a Ranger.

As far as I could tell, it does require concentration. It doesn't show as using concentration in the status bar, but my ranger loses it when she casts Hunters mark and sometimes when taking damage...

Warlocks with the right invocation can learn this (and use freely)
There are potions of this available for sale and often found as loot. If you find you have any characters who have a spell/ability to cast it (I found later that my party was missing the option) - the potion holds up until a long rest, so you only need 1 per day at most. You can pop it if you find an animal to speak. It's honestly not even a huge waste if you drink one and not meet any animals - the game seems to be generous with the potions. You can spend money on them and it's not very expensive. Especially when you are rolling in cash.
