BG3 Phase Spider Matriarch Boss Guide

Phase Spider Matriarch Boss Tips

Phase Spider Matriarch lurks within its lair accompanied by two Phase Spider. Their movement range is massive since they can teleport, so be aware of that when facing them. The other thing you have to be aware of are the three groups of spider eggs lying around the lair. Try to destroy as many as possible before initiating combat with the Phase Spider Matriarch.

Once you initiate combat, the Phase Spider Matriarch, will head to one of the three groups to hatch them instantaneously. This action will create 6 Phase Spiderling. They are not dangerous on their own, in groups they can hinder your chances of survival.

When you lower its health to 50%, the Phase Spider Matriarch will cast  Spider Queen's Wrath on itself. Increasing its Strength by 2, but lowering its Armour Class by 1.

Phase Spider Matriarch Rewards

Notes and Tips

  • Sleep spell works good with the spiderlings.
  • You can destroy the other spiderling eggs to prevent her from spawning more spiderlings. The ones on the far platform from her are fairly easy to sneak to without detecting - be sure to equip the Spiderstep Boots on the person sneaking to prevent detection! She will still be able to hatch the ones she starts by, but it makes things a lot easier in the last half of the battle.
  • While attacking or destroying the closest clutch of eggs near the Matriarch will aggro the boss, by destroying all the eggs by sneaking before starting the fight and starting the actual fight by using a Fireball on the Matriarch and the last clutch of eggs closest to it is a relatively easy method of getting the achievement "Pest Control".
  • Destroying the web bridges the Matriarch is standing on will result in fall damage.
  • If you don't care about the robe/loot she drops you can use a gravity pushing spell, thunder arrow, etc. To push her off in to the green cavern below… Instant kill. Also, shoving her down the central cavern hole now causes her lootable corpse to be found in the Underdark at the spot where you land if you feather fall down the hole.

In a fight I pushed her into a few of the holes 3 times. Each time she teleported back up and healed for any damage dealt. They must have removed the one shot achievement

      • Anonymous

This thing just ended my Honour Mode run and idk how. I was wildshaped into a bear with full HP and in 1 hit I was dead. Not knocked down, DEAD. So, beware of spiders I guess

        • Anonymous

Honor Mode: She get's a legendary reaction. When one of her children is hurt(Or killed, I can't remember, sorry), she can USE A REACTION to bind the target in webs. The target is effectively incapacitated, and if left in the cocoon for 3(4?) turns, will be killed. The webs can be removed by damaging the target.
Tip: Dropping her via webs is still the optimal strat. Clearing her babies is important, just have your weakest attack clear the webs if you fail the save. Have your highest dex/str(save needs confirming) character kill the first add per turn and have fun.

          • Anonymous

It's quite easy to drop her into Undredark, but you won't get exp - payback for an easy kill. Her corpse can be looted in the Underdark.

            • Anonymous

Lol if you stand on the web above the giant crater/hole and cut the web. You get a cool little cut scene and wind up in the underdark. Then... well just make to save right before trying it lol

              • That boss is stoopid. I mean it's not hard to kill by any means, but if you are not killing it on first turn, it will waste alot of your time by jumping around with misty step even blinded.

                • Anonymous

Cast Minor Illusion in the middle of the web across one side of the Underdark shaft, and she's got a pretty good chance of falling down the hole. Might take a few casts before she notices.

                  • Anonymous

Casting Fire bolt on the web bridges while the matriarch is on there deals huge chunkc of damage, and unlike the matriarch herself, the webs are actually able to be hit

Very important info : matriarch MUST be killed normal way BUT AFTER she summons little phase spiders. Phase spiders can be picked up and then thrown to the ground multiple times until they ooze simple toxin pool , you can then dip weapons outside of combat in this pool to have a permanent 1d4 on your weapons until long rest. Thing is regular phase spiders are a bit too heavy, with 16 strength(+3 modifier) they can't be picked up... and at that point in the game... BUT the little phase spider summons from matriarch are weighting only 1 kg , so grab em, stash em, dip em! every day for a free 1d4 on all weapons on all your party. Besides killing it regular way awards both exp&loot, something to consider.

just burn the spider web walkways when she is standing on them and she loves to do that. it takes nearly 1/3 of her health for each fall.
Try to be careful tho. When she drops to the "Chasm" you can say farewell to the Chest armor loot.

                        • Anonymous

You can still loot her if you knock her in the pit, her body falls down in the underdark a bit below the Myconid Colony. Just cam across her, and nearly jumped out of my skin thinking it was another i had to fight haha.

In my case she didn't hatch spiders, I didn't destroy any on the arena before the fight, but destroyed every in the area prior to the boss. To initiate fight from the distence with Astarion, it took several arrows and 1/4 of matriarch HP until she finally responded and immedeately attacked my group without going to her eggs. Her position was on the second floor, near south island.

Did all out of combat with Astarion Level 3 solo: matriach appeard and hatched 5 spiders, i flew with the group and full rested one night. Came back and try to fight her, but this ends bad. So, i took Astarion let destroy him the most eggs with oil/fire, burn two webs and some spiderlings with fire arrow included the matriarch sit on one these and falls on the next ground. Startet turn based battle, one hit a middle spider with stealth arrow and the rest of the fight from higher point was: Fire arrow-hide-turn end-repeat. The only reaction from the spiders saying: husch and shh, but they dont move. So all died slowly with fire arrow, think they was buggy not sure.

is it possible that she dissapeared? i was fighting her and after killing the spiderlings she just disappeared

BRO YOU CAN RESSURRECT HER FOR YOUR TEAM if u push her down the pit and then use Sovereign Glutt to resurrect her

I don't know if I caught a bug or something, but I got XP for killing her with fall damage. Difference is I knocked her out not into the central pit, but into the pit near where you enter this area. I used Monk's Furry of Blows: Push. She flew away into that pit, died, but didn't dissapear. Her corpse was kinda floating. Got XP but no loot. So I killed her normally after that.

                                      • Anonymous

Baited her on the web on which I previously set up a oil barrel, blasted the barrel with a basic fire cantrip. She took 40 from the barrel then fell down the pit for another 60 plus went prone, my melee guys were waiting for her there. So around 130 dmg on the first round. It made the fight a breeze on tactican. For anyone struggling. Cheers

I killed her using Eldrich blast by Wyll. Did not realize I could do this haha. Hopefully I can find her corpse and loot as it says in the description.

                                          • Anonymous

There's a bottomless pit behind her. If you don't care about the loot, you can push her off the web bridge into the pit. This will get you an achievement for killing her before she can hatch any eggs.

                                            • Anonymous

Or just have Wyll with Repelling Blast and knock it off to the chasm with eldritch blast. It is doable when the queen phases to the eggs on the lower floor.

If you happen to have a vial of Drow Poison, you can take an archer like Asterion and snipe the phase spiders from outside of combat. If they fail the save against the sleep, they don't throw you into combat, potentially allowing you to kill them both before you even engage the matriarch.

                                                • Anonymous

I fought her head on with the help of the ogre war horn, since I had just made a deal they could eat what we killed together. Made quick work of the boss even with my guys only being level 3 :)

                                                  • Anonymous

I used an eldritch blast and attacked her before the combat started. I have the knockback effect in my eldritch blast. It sent her flying into the abyss one shotting her. I came here wondering if she had any special items she dropped.

                                                      • Anonymous

The way I approached the fight on Tactician using a Level 3 party

(Optional?) Destroy all the eggs on the top floor so that the Matriarch teleports to the bottom eggs to pop them when you start the fight
                                                        1. Pull the extra Phase Spiders using a solo ranged character while your entire party is waiting back in the cave, I sat them next to the little camp section
                                                        2. Dash all the way back to your party while not leaving the fight (just don't run too far all at once). This will pull the Phase Spiders but not the Matriarch, as it just chills in the lower area.
                                                        3. Kill the Phase Spiders
                                                        4. Fight is now reset except w/o the extra Phase Spiders
                                                        5. Zone out and zone back in using any of the doors or the well bucket, this will reset the Matriarch back to the top area
                                                        6. When it starts running around the web paths on the far side, start the fight using a fire cantrip or ranged attack to destroy the path, the drop will do about 50 to 60 damage each.
                                                        7. You want to immediately break up your party and spread out your members to avoid the huge poison AoE when it teleports back up, preferably sitting them near the two other web paths.
                                                        8. The Matriarch will teleport back up, do some attack, and then run back to one of the web paths. Drop it again with some spell/attack.
                                                        9. When it teleports back up, finish it off with regular combat. The most important thing is that you do not want to finish it off with fall damage, you will not get the exp (a pretty hefty 250 for the party). Enjoy your poison robe and dark amethyst.

Spiritual Weapon on Shadowheart is amazing for tanking the little spiders because it's immune to poison damage and you can summon it as close as you want to them.

                                                        • Anonymous

Fought her last night with my party still level 3. Honestly got really scary near the end. The plan was to assassinate the 2 normies nearby before the fight, and it worked. But the first hits on the matriarch were misses and we ended with sub 10 hp on everybody. I probably spent a good 20 minutes on planning out the fight as she cycled through her layer lol.(Balanced)

                                                          • Anonymous

Somehow for me the spider fell into the hole on its own. I dont remember exactly what happened, i just thought the she teleported to some web out of sight, and i was dealing with the small spiders so i forgot about her, I then finished the small spiders, and she's no where to be found. Then i jumped down the hole and found her corpse with the poison robe. Weird

Killing her with fall damage or throwint down the underdark denies all XP tough, and she rewards 150 XP pretty early in the game.

                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

The spider webs have 4 hp and if you knock down the webs when the matriarch is on it she will take a ton of fall damage.
