Necromancy of Thay Information

  • Effect: Gain Speak with Dead once per long rest.
  • Once obtained, this Status Effect is permanent.

How to Acquire Necromancy of Thay

Necromancy of Thay can only be obtained by completing the Act 1 Quest Search the Cellar in the Blighted Village. In order to obtain the Necromancy of Thay Status Effect, you must successfully find a tome of the same name during the quest. Do note that at the end of the quest, you may choose to give the tome to either Astarion or Gale, or choose to destroy the tome, however, doing either of these actions will prevent you from ever obtaining the Necromancy of Thay Status Effect. Please visit the Search the Cellar page for a full walkthrough on finding and unlocking the Necromancy of Thay tome for use.

Before reading the tome, it is recommended to quickly save the game, as you will be met with three Wisdom Saving Throws of increasing difficulty. This will come in handy especially for player characters with no Proficiencies in Wisdom, as your character must be the one that reads from the tome to gain this Status Effect. Keep rolling until you succeed in one Saving Throw, and you will obtain the Necromancy of Thay Status Effect.

To fully unlock the book, you need to enter the Sorcerous Vault in Baldur's Gate.

To access the vault, sneak into the office of the Sorcerous Sundries, then use the portal there.

Inside the vault, you can find lots of scrolls and other loot. Don't forget to read The Red Knight's Final Strategem, it gives you a Scroll of Artistry of War.

On the other end of the vault, there are three sealed doors, one leads to Elminster's Vault, and one leads to Karsus' Vault. Both two vaults are locked by now, and you can only open the Silverhand door.

Important detail to note : reading the Tharchiate Codex and then removing the curse it inflicts upon you gives you a recurring bonus : after every long rest, start the day with 20 temporary HP.

I had to read it 2 times before I actually got the ability, even after passing all the save throws. Is that normal?

You can open both doors using the "knock" spell, completely avoiding the whole puzzle. They should probably fix that.

Thank Larian it was nerfed - this trivialized every fight in the last Act. It was stupid strong, even on Tactician.

It was nerfed. Now you can only summon 4 ghouls with 20 hp and you cannot even control them anymore, they are set to auto-AI. I don't know what were Larian thinking, especially with the auto AI part.

Sorcerer can read the Tome using INT (IIRC), with each difficulty check lower by 5, making it much more manageable.

Something went wrong with my ghoul spell. I can only summon 4 ghouls and i also post control over their actions

I was able to cast Danse Macabre on a single corpse as it does not destroy the target corpse, like zombies and skeletons do. Probably not intended but extremely powerful

Managed to swap the character carrying the binded book under Sussur Antimagic Field, but after reloading the game I no longer could. Might have been a bug, but something to watch out for.

It's not letting any of my characters re open the necromancy of that book. Oh well guess it's a free +1 when I go to the temple of grief.
