Initiative

Initiative determines the order of turns during combat. Once an Initiative score is rolled, then it's set for the rest of the encounter.

When combat starts, every participant rolls a d4 and adds their Ability Modifier (Dexterity) to determine their place in the initiative order.

The participant with the highest adjusted roll goes first and the participant with the lowest roll goes last.

Initiative is a combat mechanic term in Baldur's Gate 3. Combat in Baldur's Gate 3 are turn based mechanisms based on D&D 5th edition.

Initiative Tips & Notes

  • Dissimilarities with D&D 5e:
    • BG3 uses a d4 instead of a d20 for initiative rolls. Given the lesser random range, bonuses to initiative are that much more important.
    • The Level 2 Bard ability Jack of All Trades appears not to boost initiative as it should according to D&D5e rules.

The very low die rolled for base initiative makes Alerts +5 initiative very powerful in this game. Being able to have all 4 of your party members move first lets you crowd control/kill more enemies immediately and cripple their retaliation, letting you basically steamroll many encounters.

I'm pretty sure that it's adding a d4 instead of a d20 because the highest initiative roll I've seen is a 9 and that's only because I've recently spec'd one of my guys to have +7 to initiative. I figure I could hit an 11 at some point, but I have to have had at least 100+ combatants and not one rolled above a 10 to date? That's just impossible. Why isn't anyone talking about this? I feel like I'm taking crazy pills

Something seems to be wrong with initiative in this game. I have NEVER (and I mean NEVER) rolled above an 8 on initiative. Monsters regularly lose to me as well, so perhaps they're only rolling d10s for initiative or something?
