Flails in Baldur's Gate 3 are pieces of equipment that are used to inflict damage against hostile characters such as Enemies and Bosses. Flails are traitless Martial Weapons in BG3 that can be one-handed, dealing 1-8 Damage without enchantments. They have a range of 1.5m, and deal Bludgeoning Damage.
Many Flails have unique properties, so you should read carefully what these do, and many also have Weapon Actions that can only be used if you are Proficient with Flails in BG3. These Weapon Actions are Concussive Smash and Weakening Strike.

Are flails martial or simple? (obviously it is so brutal that it lacks finesse)

Missing Flind's flail, I forget what it's called but the gnoll leader attacking the caravan guys between the tollhouse and Waukeen's rest is wielding it.
