Dragonborn is a Race that will be added in Baldur's Gate 3Dragonborns primary ability is Strength. Note, the info on this page is based on data mining and DND player books and is subject to change.

  • BG3 Full Game Note: In the full launch of Baldur's Gate 3, Ability Score Points for Races that were present in Early Access are removed. And instead, Ability Score Points in the full game correspond with the Class players will choose.

A proud race that values clan and skills above all else. Once enslaved by dragons, they strive to be self-sufficient, not wanting to be beholden to anyone, not even the gods.

Dragonborn Traits:

  • Draconic Ancestry. You are distantly related to a particular kind of dragon. Choosing your dragon ancestor determines the damage and area of your breath weapon, and the type of resistance you gain:
  • Black Dragonborn: Acid (DEX save)
  • Blue Dragonborn: Lightning (DEX save)
  • Brass Dragonborn: Fire (DEX save)
  • Bronze Dragonborn: Lightning (DEX save)
  • Copper Dragonborn: Acid (DEX save)
  • Gold Dragonborn: Fire (DEX save)
  • Green Dragonborn: Poison (CON save)
  • Red Dragonborn: Fire (DEX save)
  • Silver Dragonborn: Cold (CON save)
  • White Dragonborn: Cold (CON save)
  • Breath Weapon: You can use your action to exhale destructive energy. It deals damage in an area according to your ancestry. When you use your breath weapon, all creatures in the area must make a saving throw, the type of which is determined by your ancestry. The DC of this saving throw is 8 + your Constitution modifier + your proficiency bonus. A creature takes 2d6 damage on a failed save, and half as much damage on a successful one. Damage increases to 3d6 at level 6 and 4d6 at level 11. After using your breath weapon, you cannot use it again until you complete a long rest.

Dragonborn Tips & Notes

  • In other sources, the Dragonborn race features +2 Strength and +1 Charisma. This will be changed on the full launch of BG3 and the Ability Score points are now associated with the Class that players will choose.
  • Most dragonborn have a conal breath, the only exception is Brass subrace which has a column shaped breath.
  • If romancing Lae'zel, dragonborn will gain higher approval with red dragonborn gaining the most.

Circle of spores green dragonborn has been in my mind, but seeing that they get nothing beyond what is described in-game, it would probably suck harder than a mindflayer

Wow this race wasn't implented properly at all. I thought cause their deats were subpar they'd make up for it with dialogue options but no earlier today was I attacked by a bunch of drunk kobolds without them mistaking me for one of their own, mistaking my mighty form for a dragon or bowing to me in such praise as I would be a God to them
An the fifth tablet said they went their looking for dragons boy did they find one

seeing as dragonborn were one of the last races to be added, it wouldnt be too far fetched to say they were rushed

Simply make breaths an action, bonus action and opportunity and suddenly this race ain't so bad. Lots of classes have garbage bonus action options without multiclassing and pairing Grease or Create Water with a bonus action breath would at least be a decent combo.

Dragonborns left in the dust in many aspects.
And yes these following can be modded in but prefer official Larian made: Racial feats like Dragon Fear + Dragon Hide with melee ( 2 feats each for all races ) from Xanathar, Gem dragonborns, gem dragon ancestries for draconic bloodline sorcerer ( Larian could easly homebrew in this ) and improved breath weapon from Fizbans. 1d10, 2d10 from lvl 5 then 3d10 at lvl 9 etc. Dragonborns got curbed hard!
Shouldnt need to mod the game to have viable dragonborn but on Nexus, a fella is working hard on Gem dragonborns and more, there another one that really ramps up the race but have a few things NOT from source books. So if wanting authencity its not quite there.

So... you get a poorly scaling damage ability and resistance to one damage type.
Meanwhile dwarf gets saving throws from poison and gains poison resistance.
Dwarf also gains proficiency in a few options and subclass additions.
I feel like a number of the races aren't equal when it comes to initial stats or scaling in usefulness throughout the game.

note for the page: the breath weapons do *not* leave ground effects.
they do however trigger environmental effects as expected, e.g. you can use fire breath to set oil spills on fire.

I really don't get why Draconic Bloodline Sorcerers get Draconic Resilience, granting 13 AC when you aren't wearing armour and +1 HP per Level and the Race only gets Draconic Ancestry (Sorcerer gets both)

                    • Anonymous

By maxing out each of the stats in the character creator, using "T" to examine the ability, and hovering over the breath weapon so it actually shows the save DC, it looks like the dragonborn's breath weapon save DC scales off of your charisma modifier, not your constitution. Just throwing that out there.

If you change, give the opportunity to replace their breath, I doubt that anyone will be against it. I'm certainly an optimist.

                        • Honest question to anyone checking this page. Do you think all subrace pages could be deleted? There is no actually important info on them and i dont think anyone checks it either. It just makes mess

For some reason the BG3 version of Dragonborn is even weaker than the 5e PHB version that most of the content in BG3 is based on. In PHB, breath weapon gains extra dice as you level (2d6 at level 1, 3d6 at level 5, 4d6 at level 11, 5d6 at level 16) - the same as Cantrip scaling. Additionally, the PHB version recharges on short or long rest.

Instead, the BG3 version does not increase from 2d6, and only recharges on a long rest. Without any other features given in compensation, BG3 Dragonborn is weaker than the PHB version - and they're generally not considered all that great even with the full PHB features.

In terms of the benefits of being a dragonborn in BG3, it's really only the damage resistance feature, and some dialog choices. With 2d6 maximum, small range/radius, and Long Rest only recharge, the breath weapon rapidly becomes weaker than nearly any other source of damage. Throwing items are directly comparable to this weapon even before feats, class features, or items that improve throwing items. In fact, thrown weapons are notably superior as they have a larger effective distance, comparable damage, no recharge, and can be part of an extra-attack cycle instead of consuming your entire action.

I really want to enjoy Dragonborn, but their racial features are unequivocally worse than all other races in BG3.

one thing to note is that, despite the tool tip indicating it's a cone, bronze dragonborn's breath weapon is acutaly a column just like brass

worst thing about the race is that it's not finished.
When playing a Dragonborn you have many conversations where you just have a "continue" instead different choices to answer.

                                It's completely not finished.

I do hope Larian ends up tweaking the Dragonborn racial abilities slightly, the resistance is nice but the breath ability is severely underwhelming. A 2d6 breath ability that doesn't scale or gains any sort of improved version at later levels to be used only once per long rest is a tad dissapointing. I hope they end up implementing Fizban's rules for the Dragonborn (i.e.: dragon breath does 1d10 damage at first, then 2d10 after lvl 5 and 3d10 after lvl 11 as well as being useable a few more times per long rest).

Is the breath bugged for anyone else? No matter which ancestry I respec into, it keeps giving me Frost Breath.

                                    • Anonymous

Best one by far is Brass as it gives you a column breath attack rather then a cone, more range more potential targets. Fire is all over the place so it's nice to have resistance against it.

                                      • Anonymous

this says fire breath goes to 5d6 at lvl 16? but devs said the game only goes to lvl 12... did that change already?

There's a mod called "Dragonborn and Dragonbreath Unleashed" on the Nexus which in my opinion is necessary to play them at the moment. I like the full version of the mod which adds savage attacker, even if it is a little bit too powerful.

No darkvision and they didn't go with the updated breath weapon for Dragonborn? So very sad with how cool they look in the game. Really hope some modders fix this.

                                            • Anonymous

With the change to race attribute bonus not being tied to a race, Dragonborns lost the most important thing they had going on. Right now power wise they are the worst choice for pretty much everything. They should at least get Dark Vision or better breath weapon - more uses per day or changed to some kind of cooldown like 1 per hour etc.

                                              • Anonymous

I would like the Dragonborn to be improved. They're still underwhelming in my opinion. Maybe improve the breath weapon by an extra 2d6 and maybe give them some natural armor bonus at least.

                                                • Anonymous

I just hope they will be added, hopefully with an decent background dragonborn character to chose from. Solasta already has Dragonborn as playable race and it is done perfectly. For instance you can chose if you want tail or tail-less dragonborn.
