Counterspell Tips & Notes

Very essential in any party, the ability to completely nullify a spell that is about to be casted can be the difference between your party being alive or dead. Counterspell also mentions that it can only nullify it as long as the spell is equal or less than level 3, but if the spell that is being casted level 4, then Counterspell is required to be level 4 to counter it.

When a reaction is given, you can see what level is the spell by hovering on it and also the damage, one trick to realize the exact spell level is to read the damage that is about to deal, important that in reactions you will get an entire details of who's casting the spell, on who they are casting and what spell they are casting, if you hover on the spell you will see its spell level and the damage it will deal, the damage dealt will change if it was upcasted but the "level" part of it will not change, examples:

  • Fireball, Level 3 - 8d6 damage requires Counterspell Level 3.
  • Fireball, Level 3 - 10d6 damage requires Counterspell Level 5.
  • Polymorph, Level 4  requires Counterspell Level 4. (Note: There's no way to know if this was upscaled)

Upscaled none-damaging spells are very rare and sometimes scripted for certain special battles, in some cases it is impossible to figure out the exact spell level and there's some fights where they will cast an upscaled Level 1 none-damaging spell that cannot be countered by level 3, there's no possible way to counter a level 7 - 9 spell (level 7, 8 and 9 spell slots unlocks when you reach level 13, 15 and 17 respectively but the game caps to level 12).

Since it is a reaction that is beneficial, it is wise to set your "Attack of Opportunity" to "ask" so you don't lose your reaction to counter a dangerous spell.

TIL you can get Counterspelled while Invisible. The homebrew changes they made to this spell is absolutely insane and I love it!

This spell should require LoS. It's insane seeing the same NPC who is well out of LoS and in another room spam this crap.

to the authors, I really love when people add the latin translations for the spells, and since this spell is an extremely satisfying gamechanger, "IMPERATIVIIIII" has become a meme in my head. Idk if I'm hearing that right though, and I didn't take latin in school (didn't think I'd ever need to infiltrate a cult). So yeah, I'd love to see that on this page. My guess is like "i'm ordering [this spell to not happen]"

Warlock 5 lvl / Bard 5 lvl multiclass. Using counterspell consumes 3 lvl regular spell slot instead of warlock one. Despite description says it will use warlock spell slot.

College of Lore Bards can pick it at level 6 via Magical Secrets and it is one of the best use for their level 3 spell slots, the other one is Fireball, which is also on that list, and you can pick 2.

The first time I found out how powerful this spell was it was during the fight with the duegar on the beach. The guy did his scripted mass animate spell and gale just said no and counterspelled

Counterspell, o' Counterspell. my time playing MTG taught me that no matter how strong my spells are, no matter how crazy my turns can be, all it takes is a single well timed Counterspell to muddle it all up.

Counterspell in Baldur's Gate lives up to it's legacy. it does exactly what you want it to and what you'd expect it to: it gives control over which incoming spells succeed and which ones fizzle. the primary thing folks seem to miss with Counterspells is that they aren't just simple 1:1 trades, they're an exchange; in this case, a Reaction for an Action. sand for gold.

Counterspell isn't for blowing out every spell an enemy tries to cast; it's for stopping the ones that would spell doom for a party. a Fireball on three party members standing on oil. a Misty Step that would lead to a push, sending your highground Cleric falling to the horde of angry goblins below. even something simple like an Eldritch Blast that would down a low health Paladin -- a Paladin who would stabilize themselves with Lay on Hands next round and keep on fighting.

Counterspell provides an ounce of prevention rather than a cure, and it's very, very powerful because of that. sometimes you don't need more healing or damage; you just need to stop someone else from freely doing what they want.

u dont need to mach the spell lv with the lv of counterspell it just lest u chosse lv of counter spell in case u dont have 3s or if you prefer to save a higher spell slot.however i dont know if u have more chances to suceed if u pick a higher spell slot.

the nuh-uh spell. ridiculously OP. Enemies be like casting lvl 3-4 spells and Gale be like "no no no, you can't do that".

                            who would win
1 healing spell (requires an action, usually small range, trash)
                            or
1 "nuh-uh" (huge range, doesn't require line of sight, only requires a reaction, correct choice)

                            your move, supportcels

The scew-your-BS button. Extremely useful throughout the game. Just need to remember to check if the spell is worth negating or not

A niche spell choice. It's range is 18 m. That by itself is fine but the people who are casting it are going to be mages. And a mage trying to hit another mage will find very quickly that the distance between them is probably more than 18 m. For Warlock, Melee Warlock in particular, I would consider the spell to be essential. But everyone else can kick rocks.
